Why did Sulu get screwed?

I'm not that big a fan of the character but it still seems odd that he's MIA from 30 episodes. Almost every episode has someone sitting at the helm, where Sulu usually sits, so why wasn't he in more episodes? Is it Starfleet's policy to rotate the helm position? Was George Takei unavailable for 30 episodes? I mean, to make an analogy, there was never an episode wherein they had a Chief Engineer other than Scotty, or a Chief Medic other than McCoy (okay, other than "Where No Man Has Gone Before," so why is someone else so often at the helm?

I honestly can't say I noticed this. Needs investigation, someone call up Roddenberry.

He left to film "The Green Berets" during Star Trek's original run. He wasn't "screwed." He decided to accept the role in another production running concurrently with Trek.

Oh, I did not know that. In retrospect it probably would have been better for Takei to stay with Trek than work on a mediocre John Wayne film, but of course no one at the time realized how huge ST would become. Anyway, mystery solved!

It doesn't really matter because he still remains one of the great seven from TOS

I doubt it really matters. He is still recognized as a major Trek cast member, ended up in all the movies, and still probably got paid way more to appear in The Green Berets than he would have working on the episodes he missed.

I don't believe Takei hurt his career filming a john wayne movie. It didn't hurt his standing in the franchise, he was in all the tos movies. It probably helped his career to have some diversity in his resume.
