I personally think real life political and religious discussions belong in other boards, not a specifically themed one like this where we go to escape reality.
Back to my request- divorcing books and products seems like a small thing that would hopefully help us active in the book community promote readership and prevent dual topics with no negative repercussions.

I personally wouldn’t be here if ten forward did not exist. I am a big fan of trek been watching since the 70’s I find it fun to be here with like minded individuals. The suggestions offered within certain subgroups seem reasonable to me.

>I still think books and products should become separate boards. Those of us who read the books would like threads about certain ones to not be buried so quickly, especially as there are some great books coming out in the coming months. I would also ask if the admin staff could start threads in the products board about upcoming products so we can discuss them better than we can in ever news section. Some authors use this sub board, hopefully our feedback means something to them in future writings. If the staff started threads about upcoming products, maybe having our feedback will help them choose wisely what products to release next. As this is the only sub board which deals with fresh material from the franchise, this just makes sense as there are more opportunities for fresh subject matter. Plus, the precedent has been set with there being both a gaming AND STO sub board. |
I agree that of all of the forums here that the Books and Products forum could do with being split into two sub-forums. IMHO, the books threads can sometimes get buried under the products threads and vice-versa. If that particular forum was divided into two sub-forums then the forum would be less cluttered and it would be easier for all to use the forum since it would be easier for the members/users to find the topics/threads they want to to post in.
As for the 'extra' suggestions, I kind of thought that that was what the 10-F was for? Although I would suggest that maybe there could be a sub-forum for 10-F. And that one would be for political/religious discussions. For the sole reason that those threads can get very heated, and which there could be a warning/alert/disclaimer that said discussions tend to get like that, and they can quickly bury other threads such as sports, food and the like.
Other than that, I don't think that the other forums are quite ready for sub-forums. But they could possibly have sub-forums added in the future if needed.
|
Don't like the idea of a less moderated political subforum or of a less moderated religion subforum. I've seen how this (doesn't) work elsewhere and it promotes very nasty baiting flaming and personal attacks against those who have political / religious views some zeelots don't agree with or like.
|
???? Where in my post did I say that any sub-forum should be less moderated? All I said about a political/religious sub-forum is that it would possibly be a couple of good choices for threads that could be moveed from 10-F, since it can tend to take over the other threads like the food, hobby, sports discussions, and be made into a sub-forum.
In a way, I'm agreeing with what you said earlier about having food, hobby and sports threads. It's just that those two types of threads ( politics and religion ) tend to bury the other types of threads.
I also don't think they should do away with 10-F. It's a good forum!! My opinion is that the politics/religious threads can sometimes derail other threads there and they can and do tend to get quite heated and if they are moved to a 10-F sub-forum then there should be a friendly reminder that those topics tend to have heated discussions so it would be 'viewer be warned'.
I've seen other MBs do that and have subforums for politics and religion. I've even seen other MBs have a forum strictly called 'Discussions/Debates' for those very types of threads. They are still moderated, but members go into those threads knowing before hand that some one may not agree with them and debates may get heated. Nastyness and down right threats are taken care of by Admin and warnings are given with bannings following if others cannot behave.
I'm all for any possible future sub-forums to be fully moderated, just like the regular forums should be fully moderated. My only thoughts on sub-forums is that it makes the flow of the regular forums easier to navigate by moving a few threads into a sub-forum. Just my POV is all

Y'know, I actually thought about that. Have a "Mirror Universe" board where it is accepted that our behavior there isn't us but that of our mirror avatars. So your mirror self gets all the aggression out and people can't report things against you because you weren't trolling, your mirror avatar was simply being true to his nature.
Of course were I an admin, I would definitely NOT implement such a board.

I can't imagine a forum that encourages people to behave badly would turn out well. People seem capable of some supremely bad behaviour on this site.

Yup. A sub forum for heated discussions and debate would be fun and bring back many fine people.
|
I've seen other boards seperate politics/religion from a general forum and it seems to work. Mostly by having those in a seperate sorum/sub-forum then people have to make the choice to enter that forum and post. And they would be 'alerted' to the fact that debates there could get heated. I don't mean that people in those threads should get away with death threats and being very nasty, just that debating there could get heated, meaning that some replies might get to the point of being just on the line of getting nasty but not actually getting to that point. Close, but not crossing that line.
I enjoy a good debate! But I don't like it when people have to resort to threats or name calling to try and make their point/argument.
Okie, 'nuff said on that topic ^_^ I hope I explained myself good enough. Of course some people are only happiest when they are complaining I guess. :: shrugs shoulders ::

There is no need to be sarcastic. The point of the thread is pretty obvious; this is THE st.com boards, any sections below that title are clearly sub-boards.
I just started using trekbbs since their literature sub board is active. Man, they have their boards divided much better with literature, trek tech, fan fiction, etc. Why does that site seem better organized and have more frequent postings about books with authors frequenting the site? I would expect this site to be tip of the spear in that regard.

I agree more sub-boards would make it more user friendly especially in locating some of the threads.
In general I dont find this site very user friendly at all and if it wasnt for the people here I may have given up before getting used to it. Hopefully things will improve as time goes on.

I wouldn't mind some sub groups. It would help organize the boards a bit better. That and it would be easier to find certain subjects.
