I just learned that Star Trek Online existed.  I have never played an online game before and was hoping to get some basic information.  Here are my questions:

Controlling the Game:

Is there some type of controller / joystick? Do you actually control your players' movements like in a video game?

Multiplayer Functionality:

How does it work being a multiplayer game? If everyone can be a captain, it doesn't seem like people are members of the same crew. Do you engage the enemy together? You are in your ship firing over here and you can see others doing the same from another location in space? What about away missions? Will members of different ships walk around together?

The Subscription:

It seems like you have to get one. Does this enable you do participate in the multiplayer function? Would it be possible to just play on your own and not keep paying monthly?

Computer Requirements:

I have a Dell Latitude D630, so nothing super advanced. What will I need to do to make sure my computer can handle the game?

Thank you for your help and patience!

It is controlled with keyboard and mouse with same basic controls as any MMO.  I only played WOW once and was my only MMO experience before STo and I picked it up fast.

Everyone is their own captain, yes. You form teams and fleets and do missions together, either forming away teams of individual players or engaging enemies with a fleet of ships.  The game adds more enemies depending on how many are playing together.

You have to pay the subscription like most MMOs.  Everything takes place online from the game's servers so you have to log on.  Buying the game comes with a few month's subscription.

I can't tell you if your computer will work, the computer requirements are on the box and the game website.  You will want a good graphics card.

Alot of questions can be answered from their wiki.

Thank you for your timely response Commander Russell! Wow, that wiki is almost as good as Memory Alpha.

Yeah, the players update it religiously. It is extremely helpful for beginners. Their forums are excellent, too. Players and admins alike provide much help, some can be a little condescending though.

http://cyri.systemrequirementslab.com/CYRI/intro.aspx  this will help find out if your machine can handle the game. I have an older HP laptop and run it fine but with dumbed down graphics.

Elim Garak: Remember: it's not just Tain we're looking for. The Maryland, the Proxima, the Sarajevo, Starfleet ships that have been lost in the Gamma Quadrant for years; and their crews - brave soldiers, warriors of the Federation unaccounted for... We owe it to them to do everything in our power to find them and bring them home. It's the honorable thing to do. Worf: You use that word, but you have no idea what it means. Elim Garak: Maybe not. But you do.
