Why is that it's only in TNG that the Captains place is on the bridge is mentioned and enforced?

I can understand not having it in Enterprise and TOS, as maybe that was some new regulation that started up in Picard's time. But then this policy is never mentioned in DS9 or Voyager.

All I can think of in DS9 is that Sisko didn't have a federation first officer and Kira didn't care if he went on away missions?

But what about Janeway and Chokotay?

Anyone know why?

Maybe Riker was more of a stickler for regulations than other first officers?

Different command styles. Plus DS9 was a space station as opposed to a starship.

It was Riker's policy on his previous command.

When he is checking in with Picard in Encounter at Far Point. Picard questions him on the topic.

His response "the Captain is to valuable to risk on an away mission".

Picard response was 'We will see"

I think it is a suggestion for policy not an order.

That's true, I just always remember the Best of Both Worlds when Riker is made Captain, and he wants to go to the Borg cube to rescue Picard, and Troi tells him he's Captain now, his place is on the bridge. He looks extremely pissed off at that, but since he submits to that, I assumed that, that actually was a Starfleet Regulation that Captains no go on away missions.

And in Nemesis even Data says that it's standard procedure for Captains to not go on away missions, so that's why I've tried to figure out why Sisko and Janeway did. Maybe with Sisko it was the Space Station thing, and plus he was Captain of the Defiant, and maybe with Janeway it was because they're in the Delta Quadrent and it doesn't matter. Or it could just be a major plot hole. Something that sounded good for TNG, but they realized they can't confine the Captain to the bridge every episode.

In practice TOS fact it rough being starship just about dangers being on away mission. Since Federation lose starship in both battle. Federation conflict Klingon Empire who know what else. Major Kira and Commander Chokotay not stander starfleet officers. Both deal battle you going lose leaders in some fire fights. Some Cardasson warship kill some great leader in heat battle nothing do stop. Riker must part living time Federation all major enemies problem real damage UFP starship. It safer for Caption to stay on the starship.

I don't believe janeway beamed down into potentially hazardous conditions more than picard, I don't think sisko did either before the war, after the war there were many times where he didn't have much of a choice and felt he had a destiny anyways. Also consider, of picard, sisko, and janeway, picard was the ONLY ONE with a starfleet first officer.

Because TNG attempted to have some level of realism. It's a flag ship it's not something to be thrown into the hands of a Junior officer.

DS9 does not count of course, as the captains role was as administrator not ships captain. Major kera/Obrien technically ran the station. And on the defiant Dax/worf were often chosen as the CO.

The others simply ignored the concept of realism. Could you imagine barrack obama running around the desert in a tank.

TyrThunor raises some good points. Being the flagship (best of the best), they need to set the example.

DS9 also had the additional problem of being a station that had a starship. Kira was considered second in command on the station, since it was a Bajoran station, and Worf seemed to get the keys to the Defiant quite often. Although Dax did take command while Worf was away with the Klingons when the Dominion took over the station.
