>I thought he should take the name Zimmerman. He highly respected his designer and it pained Zimmerman that his favorite creation was quickly replaced. Zimmerman came to respect the doctor and in the books they developed an almost father-son relationship. With Zimmerman not married, without kids, and a recluse it makes side the doctor would take his name to establish a family connection and honor his creator.

This is exactly what i thought.  In essence he was an offspring of Zimmerman.  He should have kept the same last name.  Doc Zimmerman would have been just fine.

Everyone's with me. I OFFICIALLY declare his name Zimmerman. That's canon. Make it so.

What? it's the name another character called "The Doctor" uses. Why can't he?

I think the real Zimmerman wouldn't mind his name associated with this one EMH, but in general he probably would have hated for his name along with his face to be associated with them.....remember the EMH mark 1 was considered a huge failure

But he considered it his crowning achievement and was especially proud of it. The VOY EMH seemed to validate his expectations. The relaunch also has Zimmerman creating a mate for the Doctor so clearly he cared about his happiness.

at the time he did..but overall he was humiliated when they were all assigned to mining or whatever that was. That's what his hologirl companion said, That's why he was so against the doctor trying to help him when he was sick

Didn't he change his opinion of the Doctor by the end of the episode?

Gah, no. Haven't you ever watched Doctor Who? (something in me doubts that the REAL John Smith was called 'The Doctor')

You know...if Kes stayed on Voyager he would have had a name before the 7th season. She was the one who got him to think about names in the first place. I believe there were some Kes episodes where the doctor had a name.

I also think Tom Paris gave him the nickname....Doc. So if you really think about it... he had a name way before he chose Joe.
