I was reading a little just now about how Frakes wanted a male actor to play his androgenous love interest in "The Outcast."  The fact that they went with a female actor is really disappointing.  It makes me feel kind of depressed even though I know the episode is still progressive in that it's discussing the issue of sexual orientation through metaphor.  But they could have had their "Plato's Stepchildren" moment here, and Berman let the chance slip away.  (And it would have been even better than "Plato's Stepchildren" for at least two reasons I can think of.)

I've always had a great deal of respect for Frakes for standing up and saying, "You know what? They should have had me kiss a male actor."

I only wish more of the producers (and fans) were made of such stern and admirable stuff.

That reinforces my longstanding Riker fandom.  I think he's a tragically misunderstood character among some segments.
