I'm all for a gay character on Star Trek too!
Whenever will there be a new series? Here is a suggestion for a new series:
Something involving Star Fleet's Academy.
I'd like to see a REAL gay or lesbian character.
Not someone who is put into someone else's body.
I'm not asking for a hot steamy sex scene.
Just a real couple or a single person.
chance that can happen?

The Academy concept would work, as would (two) gay characters. I'd recommend making them both male since I think male homosexuality challenges stigma in a stronger way than female homosexuality. The Academy concept would work too in engaging a younger, primarily teen-20something audience, which Trek needs to build.

Some Trek fans dismiss the concept as "Star Trek 90210" but that's a very weak argument IMO.

No kidding. By the 23rd century, non-heteronormative love will be totally visible and accepted. I think deep down most people are some degree of bisexual anyway.

Trek definitely needs a gay character!  I would love to see a gay character who is portrayed as a normal person, which is what we are.  I'm surprised this thread has been going since 8am and there are no homophobic comments yet.

Are you trying to be cruel or funny? Because the former is uncalled for and you've failed at the latter.

The only character you mention that remotely challenged heteronormativity was Dax. And I'm sorry, "Rejoined" was awesome, but it isn't enough. I mean, I'm really sick of this crap. M/M love has been rendered invisible. F/F love is only present to titilate straight men. Star Trek should be better than this.

And even if I personally feel that Kirk and Spock were lovers, it was never made canon, so it doesn't count.

Have a little empathy. Imagine what it must feel like to never have a same-sex relationship portrayed as a positive, beautiful, normal thing in a show that you love, when you yourself are in a same-sex relationship. When odds are you are not allowed to marry the love of your life. Maybe you want to see a future where homophobia is a thing of a less enlightened past, the way TOS tried to show a future where the racism of the '60s was good and dead.

I'm sick of how unsympathetic Trek fans like you are toward their fellow fans. Star Trek is about love, and a more hopeful future. It is about IDIC. Star Trek has FAILED its non-heteronormative fans time and time again. If you don't see this, you haven't been paying attention.

trek doesn't need gay characters. It would never work with the mass audience.

Mass audiences watch Torchwood. Science fiction with non-heteronormative characters is already being done, and being done successfully. If Star Trek is unwilling to challenge bigotry than it deserves to die.

If star trek was to get a new series a gay character would be fitting, its the 2000s now where gay rights are being accepted. Yeah, its not universal but if other series, show, movies have all done in succesfully than they too should be willing to take on a challange

It is possible, but the producers/companies or whatever need to overcome their bigotry when it comes to this issue. Homosexuality is a part of human nature, it's been around for thousands of years, and will be around for thousands of years to come (assuming we're still all around). Accepting this is is something that even now we are having problems embracing, which is why it is more important than ever to show it's not something to be fearful of.

It is possible for a mainstream show to have homosexual characters and still be popular. Buffy the Vampire Slayer did it, True Blood is doing it now, and there is plenty more examples I just can't think of right now.

If Star Trek were to have a new series (cross fingers), I think it would highly benefit with some forward-thinking themes in it. After all, Star Trek is all about moral issues, and how we deal with them. I'd like to think that in the future, everybody would be accepted as equal, no matter what their preferences are.

I don't see a problem with it. We had Willow from Buffy pull it off with no problems (long-term, not a one-off episode), StarGate Atlantis had another (short-term), StarGate Universe had an on-going one.

If the next series has this then it should be normal. Even if we don't "see" anything on screen, the relationship itself is a start.

There is a thread titled "homosexuality in trek" (I think) a few pages back. We wore out this subject a few months back and went through many great viewpoints on the subject. I suggest reading through it.
