But is the facebook connection star trek gets with people more useful than the connection they achieve bringing people here? Are they gathering more useful information generating discussion there instead of here? I don't believe so. FB commentary tends to be more whimsical and not as thought out as on a board. It is also near impossible to have thought provoking discussions with counter points on FB since interesting comments are drowned out by the horde of quick juvenile injections.

Let me quickly stop the rumor mills:

We are NOT shutting down the ST.com boards nor are we shifting them to Facebook.

We see the social media and official sites being complementary.  The #1 traffic driver to StarTrek.com is... Facebook.  Bigger than any search engine and nearly bigger than those that just type StarTrek.com. In fact, more than 90% of all new StarTrek.com members come from Facebook.

We've heard from some ST.com fans that they will only use this site, some Facebook fans have told us that they don't want another username so they don't register here and some Twitter followers refuse to do either StarTrek.com or Facebook.

The result is that we do things across many platforms because our fanbase is as diverse in its media preferences as the Star Trek universe.

Glad to hear my thoughts confirmed!

I honestly do not understand why some people are not keen on the Facebook connection. I think it is a great way to bring new people to the site.

The admin explanation sounds reasonable. So the idea is for the different media services to complement each other, not to eventually conglomerate into one.

90% of new users come from fb!?! That sounds huge. So do those members bring a lot of traffic with them? Can they be encouraged to use the boards and engage in conversation here?

Roboto, my concern with fb is that it is becoming too invasive. It seems hard to do anything there without the site wanting to share personal data. I worry about privacy being willfully violated to sell marketing data. Of course that concern hasn't escalated to fear.
