There shouldn't be any need for primers with DS9, it really is pretty good at being a self contained show. It teaches you everything you need to know about the Cardasians, Bajorans, Ferengi, and the Maquis as you go along. There will be an occasional reference to a previous event, usually something that occurred on TNG, but the evil Picard thing is probably the biggest thing like that you'll come across. You could just watch TNG; Best of Both Worlds, and you'll know everything you need to about evil Picard.

And to all the DS9 detractors out there, just let dude watch the show, and then give a pitch for watching your favorite Trek.

"Lions and Gigers and Bears..." "Oh my."

I don't know if you're quite this far yet, but I would be interested in finding out what you have to say about the new arrival in season 7.

(I had to ask!)

i dont agree with your anti ds9 and voyager propaganda
I agree with your disagreement. DS9 is awesome and so is Voyager.

I agree with both of you! You just have to give them a chance. I remember when I was so devoted to Spock and TOS that I could hardly think about anything else and then TNG was there and I didn't want to give it a chance....... but when I did....... I loved it!

FLAG RANKS:
Fleet Admiral (the really important guys at the top who coordinate the whole of Starfleet)
Admiral
Vice Admiral
Rear Admiral
Commodore (the lowest flag rank)

COMMISSIONED (LINE) RANKS:
Captain (command most large ships, and many starbases, like Picard)
Commander (usually first officers, but they sometimes command small ships and starbases, like Sisko)
Lieutenant Commander (senior department heads, but one or two have even commanded small ships)
Lieutenant (usually department heads, like Jadzia Dax)
Lieutenant, junior grade (more senior officers within departments, occasionally a DH, like Julian Bashir)
Ensign (the lowest commissioned rank, very rarely do anything important)

NON-COMMISSIONED (ENLISTED) RANKS:
Master Chief Petty Officer (highest ranked non-coms, but we never saw one of these)
Senior Chief Petty Officer (senior non-coms, like Miles O'Brien)
Chief Petty Officer (we never saw these, either, but they exist in background material)
Petty Officer, 1st class (we never saw these, either, but they exist in background material)
Petty Officer, 2nd class (we never saw these, either, but they exist in background material)
Petty Officer, 3rd class (we never saw these, either, but they exist in background material)
Crewman (the most junior rank, these guys do all the grunt work)

There are also cadets, who are students in Starfleet Academy and as upperclass students are sometimes found on starships or space stations outside the academy.  They outrank the enlisted personnel, but only a very foolish cadet would give orders against the advice of a CPO.

I'm a wary of assuming too close parallels between Starfleet enlisted ranks and U.S. Navy.  Just because the navy has three classes of petty officer and a master CPO rank, I don't think Starfleet necessarily does. If there was a Master Chief rank, wouldn't O'Brien have been one?

The U.S. Navy has warrant officers, too, who are above CPOs and below commissioned officers, but I wouldn't assume Starfleet does.

The petty officer grades appeared in abckground production notes, and insignia was made for them.  I think they also appeared in the novels.

But, yeah, I forgot cadets
