Some people speculate that it may be possible to "warp" space.
Could warp travel someday be possible?

After over 50 years in dealing with Space,
the technology still is not there to transport
more than half a dozen at a time into orbit,
without costing the government a billion dollars.
NASA has released Public Relations comparissons
between STAR TREK technology and likely NASA
technology of the future, before. Consistantly,
they've said Warp Speed and Transporter technology
will likely remain Science Fiction. However, what
advancements we do make, whatever it is we end up
finding "out there," will probably be a lot more
amazing than what's in STAR TREK, because it's real.

The FTL warp technology (or the hyperdrive technology of Star Wars/B5/Galactica) may seem impossible at the moment but I believe its just a question of when? Space travel seemed stupid pre-20th century but we achieved it, but sadly had not capitalized on it yet. Like they say in the Universal Century series of Gundam, it is mankind's destiny to move out to space.

Heck, they once said that flying is impossible. Now almost everyone does it with airplanes. It was once said that it's impossible to break the sound barrier. Well, now, we have bullets that go as fast as Mach 1. We just happened to be stuck in the time where going faster than light seems impossible. But there will be a time that it will happen.
I just don't think it'll happen on April 2063. But if it does, I'll be really happy.

warp drive as seen in trek has been proven to be mathematically possible using Einstein's relativity equations. The problem is a power source capable of supplying the energy to warp the fabric of space time. As with all invention in the past, we have the ability, just not the materials and power.

THEY'D HAVE TO FIND ANOTHER MATRIX TO USE SINCE DILITHIUM IS FICTIONAL. MAYBE DIAMONDS OR PLATINUM COULD BE USED. THEY HAVE SAID THAT WARP DRIVE IS THE MOST REALISTIC CONCEPT. IT IS JUST A MATTER OF FINDING THE RIGHT FUEL. TRANSPROTER TECHNOLOGY IS ALSO POSSIBLE, BUT WITH HUMANS IT IS JUST A MATTER OF WHERE THE MOLECULE IN OUR BODIES SHOULD BE AT RE-MATEIRALIATION.
SINCE OUR CELLS OR ALMOST NEVER IN THE SAME PLACE. OR ATLEAST THAT IS WHAT THEY HAVE SAID!
star trek is the embodiment of UNITY!

I'm pretty sure the USAF is much furhter along in their understanding of these processes and developing the technology than they are letting on. The head of the Skunk Works was quoted saying they are much further ahead than where the public thinks we will be decades from now.

Yes, unfortunately FTL (like warp on Star Trek) isn't possible as we understand it. I am thinking more along the lines of Space-Folding being the most probable so far, but we have yet to find a way to even consider doing it. We're kind of stuck in 4 dimensions with time only moving forward.

The basic theory of warp drive, i.e. bending the space around you to move FTL to an outside observer, was I believe said to be possible in the special theory of relativity where it was also outlined that traveling faster than light was not possible.
Link: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Special_theory_of_relativity#Causality_and_prohibition_of_motion_faster_than_light
and for you lazy people
(quote) If causality is to be preserved, one of the consequences of special relativity is that no information signal or material object can travel faster than light (/quote)
(quote) This theory has a wide range of consequences which have been experimentally verified,[4] including counter-intuitive ones such as length contraction (/quote)
In this you are not traveling FTL but appear to be to an outside observer not being affected by the contraction.

Nobody is denying there are huge leaps to be made yet. But it has been shown to be-in the most theoretical of theories-possible.

Sometimes, we can ignore those things not seen. I think that anything is possible, if it pertains to the Universe and not us.

NASA suggests that the two most-promising approaches to warp drive are FTL and gravity-control (http://www.grc.nasa.gov/WWW/bpp/index.html). I think that gravity-control is much more promising and possibly attainable in the near future.
