I love the music in it.

If you're going to play Star Trek Online (STO), your best bet is to make it what I call a "fall-back game." A fall-back is a game you play when you're not really playing anything else. I have been playing World of Warcraft for five or so years, off-and-on; but I am prone to long breaks, because, like all MMORPGs, WoW gets boring, after a while.

STO is not an MMO you play for the gameplay or the competitive aspect you find in some MMOs. STO is not really trying to be an MMO like other MMOs. STO exists as a player-involved Star Trek experience. It exists so you can enjoy the Star Trek universe in a video game context. On that level, it succeeds. There are planets to explore, alien races to encounter, and a whole plethora of missions and other activities to enjoy.

I have a lifetime subscription to STO, and it's nice to know that I'll have casual access to the game for as long as it exists. It's fun, now and then, to log in, fly around on my starship, shoot some bad guys, explore a few planets, and then, when it gets a little dull, I can go play something else without feeling like I have to get value for the game time I bought.

I recommend STO for hardcore fans who want or feel like they need an interactive Star Trek experience. For someone who's just looking for a fun MMO to play, go play World of Warcraft or Star Wars: The Old Republic (when it finally comes out).

"The first duty of every Starfleet officer is to the truth, whether it's scientific truth or historical truth or personal truth! It is the guiding principle on which Starfleet is based. And if you can't find it within yourself to stand up and tell the truth about what happened, you don't deserve to wear that uniform!" - Capt. Jean-Luc Picard, "The First Duty"

STO is not the greatest MMO by far. But, if you love Star Trek, this is the game for you. It touches base with every show, except TAS. It's only about $10 US, and $15 per month. I've been wiith the game since beta and I love it.

It's pretty fun but right now there's a drought, no new content or anything being done with the game for a couple months.  As a Star Trek fan, STO does the job but it's not a super polished AAA game that you'd expect.  It's a game that started off very rudimentary and has been developing and expanding over time.  PVP is currently broken and they really need to fix this as they're losing players over the unbalance.  STO has a long way to go but they're working on it anyways. The advice about a lifetime sub is right on the mark.  Having "casual" access to the game is good but i for one am looking forward to SWTOR.

Now that the Foundry has been released, I have a new mission to play every single time I log on, and that is way more than any other MMO offers. For anyone interested, here is a list of my personal favorite missions:

I've never used the foundry. Can you sell me on it? My bitterness for fan fiction has leaked over into STO.

Most missions stink but it is nice to make your own.

It is fun, I cant tell you how time consuming it is.

Time is the big thing that keeps me out of the foundry. I probably will try some fan levels once they are thoroughly fan rated. Of course, I don't pvp right now and would rather branch into that but don't really have anyone to play with. I always get stuck with noobs or jokers who can't outfit a ship and function as a unit when I try.
