I'm not sure what the conversations are about....but this is the wierdest f***in room I've stepped in so far...and I've only been around for less than a week...I'm afraid to scope out the rest of the topix!

Honey, I'm trying to be objective.
Really, I am. But it just doesn't
seem right! When this idea of marrying
Data was first suggested on here ...
I DIED inside!!! OK?!! There it is.

starshipgalleyrat6987
One of the SELLING POINTS this site
offered me, WAS the fact that there
WOULD be so many whackadoos on here.
Unfortunately, the TREK FANS that
get all the press aren't as plentiful
as I'd hoped ...

Nice to meet you! *waves* What a great pic in your avatar. It makes you look like a Renaissance-era painting!

Aww, thank you! My friend took it, she's a great photographer. And I love Dr. McCoy, he's such a great character--he's actually my second favorite tied with Data, ironically. Of course, I'll always love Spock... But McCoy is just awesome as well. Even Karl Urban, the new McCoy, did a pretty good job. But I miss DeForest Kelley. I was so, so sad when I found out he had died :'(

> I hadn't really watched TOS yet at the time De died...it's probably better that way for me, or else I would have been pretty torn up.
Thank goodness I hadn't either. I would have been SO upset.  Although, the only part I regret about that is not being able to meet him.

I am thoroughly enjoying reading how you are trying to convince and change the minds of us Data lovers, 2takes...
He knows Data is superior to him and every other "ugly bags of mostly water" males, he's just in denial right now.

ROTFLOL! Maybe that´s the problem?

This weekend, when I was reading "Spock Must Die", I came across a somewhat similar discussion in which McCoy explains it like this:

"Our Mr. Spock, much though I hate to admit it, is a thoroughly superior specimen of the male animal - brave, intelligent, prudent, loyal, highly placed in his society - you name it, he´s got it. What sensible woman WOULDN`T want such a man? But women are also practical creatures, and skeptical about men. They can see that Spock´s not a whole man. That compulsive inability of his to show his emotions cripples him, and they want to try to free him of it. Little do they know what a fearful task it would be." (...)
"Watch the women for once! You´ll see for yourself that mothering Spock is the LAST thing they have in mind. No - they want to free him to be the whole, grownup, near-superman he hasn´t quite become, and make themselves good enough for that man." (page 27-28)

I´m not sure I fully agree with it (after all, McCoy is male, too, and so is the author giving him these lines), but it does make some sense to me. And it can almost equally be applied to Data, I think.
As for myself: barring the fact that they´re both fictional, I´d much rather have Data for a partner than Spock. For I have to agree with Csillan Rose (?), 2takes: considering a guy for possible marriage is about a lot more than just sex. Perhaps if you try to forget about the sexual part of it, our replies make a little more sense to you?

"He" can't get you pregnant! As for Tasha, she was Under the Influence! AND she DEEPLY regretted it, after.

Who says he can´t get you pregnant? Has that ever been established? As far as I know, the whole idea of Data being able to procreate in some form has never been addressed in the series or the movies. So it´s not impossible that he might be able of procreation. Sure, not with DNA carrying sperm perhaps, but I can imagine a way in which he might be able to set off a cloning process in the sexual act.
As for Tasha: "deeply regretted" isn´t quite what I read in her reaction at the end of that ep. (Tureaz: it´s The Naked Now) Thoroughly embarrassed, yes, but seeing how it also created a bond between them (which doesn´t necessarily mean she was in love with him), I find it hard to believe that she indeed regretted it. Or at least regretted it as deeply as you emphasize here.

Oh, I find the arguments of those
in favor of marrying Data to be
"... intriguing."

But when it's questioned. THEY get
defensive about it, which is telling:

They know their Data fantasies are
taboo, that's the attraction! They say,
"2takes, if you don't think about the
sex involved, it'll make sense to you."

Uh ...

So far, I can't see any other reason to
commit to an ill-advised affair with a robot
EXCEPT for a sexual encounter!!!

Otherwise, there IS no fantasy! With a MAN,
it's all about the caring, protection and love.
The thousand-and-one moments of affection ...
The sacrificing. The giving. AND the sex!!!

Thank you! And Frakes, I think the difficulty you're facing is this: You don't see him as a sentient being, and we do. If he's sentient, there's no reason not to want to be in a relationship with him. If he's not sentient, then yes, he would be a toaster.

We're not getting defensive, we're just going about this from different viewpoints. I think we're going to have to agree to disagree, that's all. If you want to do an "Is Data Sentient?" board that will open up a whole other area to talk about, because I'm a little curious as to why you think he's not.

Sorry, I'm just having difficulty seeing your side because I consider Data a person. If I met him in real life, sex would be the last thing that would come to my mind, because I would find him engaging as a person, not a toy.
Like I said, the question of his sentience seems to be what is actually bothering you here.

Data is not a toaster, nor is he a box with wheels. There is no question to whether Data is sentient, as there was a whole episode discussing, arguing then proving the fact.

Honestly, you posted a topic called 'Would you marry Data?' then was disbelieving when a lot of Data lovers turned up and said yes. I'm sorry, I'm new and confused, were you expecting different?

I didn't vote because none of the options satisfied me. You should have presented an option of 'no, but he would make a fantastic friend'.

"The bartender is an artificial lifeform." later... "Contact the operations officer to assist you." "He's in Ten-Forward... waiting tables."

A very good point!

And Frakes is the first person I've encountered who doesn't consider Data to be sentient, I'm a little surprised and confused as to why not.
