Interesting since the "morphs" in T2 were arguably a copycat effect in themselves, utilised by several different movies including -- among others -- Willow.

Please realize I dig all the characters on DS9.
That said, Odo is probably my least favorite of the main cast.
Throughout the course of the show, he really only seemed to form an attachment with Kira; I guess his distant nature kinda bugged me...

I love Odo's character. I think he's the best example of the Spock archetype since the original--kind of an odd man out who is trying to figure out where he belongs in the Universe. I especially enjoyed watching his relationship with Kira play out.

I loved Odo! I loved the interactions he and Quark shared. He was a wonderful character and I absolutely loved the episodes with him and Lwaxana Troi. Odo was perhaps my fave male character in DS9. Have any of you seen some of the earlier character designs of him? One made him look kind of like the Thing from the Fantastic Four, that wouldve been an interestin approach...Rene Auberjonois did an excellent job with the character!

Odo is my favorite DS9 character so I think he was a good idea. He was a very complex man and a really interesting character.

In my opinion, DS9 would feel a little lonely without our changeling friend. I mean, who would argue and fight with Quark most episodes?! Worf may fight with Quark, yet Worf does not do it nearly so comedically. And do remember, some of the best episodes involved an "Odo origin story". And just to answer Matthias's point about the Kira-Odo romance, I absolutely loved that. Do remeber that Odo isn't just your average Changeling. Over the course of the series we see Odo grow more and more like a solid. Yes, it would be implausible for any other changeling to consider a romantic relationship with a solid, but do remeber that Odo has had years of contact with solids, especially Kira, and it is a good 4 or 5 seasons in before we even get Odo to admit he has some feelings for Kira to Quark (the one when he smashes everything in his room (please someone provide me with a source for this episode)) Above all, Odo was perhaps one of the most interesting characters ever written for Star Trek!

I like how Odo was always busting Quark's balls. The play between those two characters was always one of my favorite parts of the series.

Odo was a pretty cool character. At first, I didn't like him. Then, I came to appreciate not only his unique capabilities, but--even more--his honest, dedication to the truth and his principles. It was understandable that he wanted to return to his people, but his departure was a huge loss for the Federation.

I liked Odo, but man... he was really a fascist at times. I mean he arrests Quark without charges regularly. He wanted to break up Rom's union, despite the fact they were after Quark, just because they were disorderly, heck he even once offered to arrest a bunch of Pagh-wraith cultists that were peacefully chanting outside the temple just because they were annoying his girlfriend.
It's no wonder Gul Dukat thought he'd make a great security officer during the occupation. Personally I think the female shapeshifter(really wish they gave her a name) hit it dead on, the only reason he stayed in the Alpha Quadrant was for Kira. Certainly he could have easily fit in with the Dominion with a bit of perspective change.
Don't get me wrong, he's a deep a complicated character and really rounded out the cast. Not just the security grunt that Worf was by any means. His love/hate relationships with Garak and Quark were really fun to watch and his angsty side came out with Kira. Seceretly pining over Kira for over five years watching her date guy after guy?
He definitely didn't fit into the Federation niche, but that was part of what made DS9 what it was.

I know. That's kinda why he's a facist, he didn't really care about freedom of speach. I like him, but it was his way or the highway.

when I first heard about him I wasn't excited about the character. The whole data/pinochio/I want to be a real boy had become really tiresome for me. Both I think were an attempt to capture the same commentary from the outside about the human condition that Spock did so well.
When I first saw the character I was impressed at shapshifting effect. It was a pretty new effect I believe, just seen first in Terminator 2.
Years later when I watched the whole series I think Odo became my favourite ds9 character. His morality that he followed to a letter while having no idea where it came from was a wonderful trait. And his search for his people was heartbreaking.
My only quibble about the character was his relationship with kira. I liked the unrequented love thing, but him in an actual physical relationship was just creepy
