I thought it was terrible, the worst one. The content could have been reduced by half and it would have been a much better movie by removing the needless ship shots, face close ups, etc. Then I would have been more gripped by not being lost in the meaningless screen time. At that point point, TMP becomes like Generations- good story, but feels more like an episode than a movie. A tv show has a different feel than a movie and different metrics for successful story. That said, it is still a classic like 2001, which also dragged and allowed trek to learn what worked and what didn't, making TWOK better.
Oh, by the way... YOU HAVE BETRAYED EVERYTHING THAT STAR TREK FANS SHOULD STAND FOR! YOU HIPOCRITE!! YOU COWARD!!!! HOW DARE YOU!?!?!?! ARRGGGHHHH!!! TRAITOR...TRAITOR!!! PUMMEL HIM WITH DISEASED MEAT!!! Just thought I'd say that.

Vger you are a filthy hypoctire, LOL.

But to the topic at hand, though it is not one of my personal favorites, TMP was a good movie for the time that it was made, and a pretty good way to transition the TOS characters to the big screen.

Our favorite. Absolutely. Been that way since Spock grabbed Kirk's hand and said: "This simple feeling is incomprehensible to V'Ger."

Best. Trek. Ever!

i agree, it was a fantastic film. i liked the space scenes and the warp core looks alot like voyagers.
The design of the Engine Room in TMP (and in TWOK, subsequently) was awesome. It's strange that we never saw that set again.
when they created voyagers warp core im sure the used tmp's design with a different color for the antimatter reaction. so thats the only time you see anything similar to that set, however the wrath of khan engine room didnt make much sense to me. i just didnt see anything amazing or anything that stood out.

The TWOK engine room set is identical to the TMP set, save the addition of the dilithium reaction chamber.

The Motion Picture is
very beautiful to look at.
The neutrals and tans of the
costumes are very pleasing.
Visually, stylistically,
it's very unlike the sequels,
even though most cannibalized it.
That's what I like most, really.

The Motion Picture is a great movie!  I remember going to see it in the theaters in 1979.  As a long time fan, I enjoyed those long scenes of the exterior of the Enterprise.  The soundtrack is fantastic.  I listen to it on a weekly basic.  I liked everything about this movie.  I even have it on my ipod touch.  Definitely one of my top three Star Trek movies.

I agree. It's easily Jerry Goldsmith's best work...and it may be one of the best motion picture soundtracks ever. It's just beautiful, masterful work. It definitely raises the quality of the overall film.

I listen to it on my iPod while I'm at work...!
