As canon as the books. Soft canon its the term. It can be over rided later if they want, as can any fiction, really.

Alot of times, MMORPGs are rarely canon because you can end up doing missions that the main characters from the show, movie, etc... did which could create an alternate timeline.
They have two settings: stun and kill... It'd be best not to confuse them. ~~ Lt. Reed

I would be shocked if TPTB allow the online game to become canon. It seems too much of a sandbox type game.

It's a great game. And season 3 made some amazing improvements. But, yes, it is hard for it to be canon when you can fly the nx around in the 25th century. Some of the story, like with 8472 and why threw hobus star exploded are good and fit with canon. But some stories like all the borg stuff doesn't match with the relaunch books.

Yes bringing back the borg to me seems to be the fatal mistake. Star Trek fans are tired of the Borg being the everyday bogeyman.

STO made the borg very zombie like, and not as organized. I could see it working with destiny if they were separated from the collective during the events of destiny.
Also the writers of the books worked under the new editorial controls so they are familiar with the recent developments and sto does mention that the borg returned after a long absence and in the first encounter it is stated that they are acting funny.

Well it just seems rather tire some. I can understand the assimilated crew of the USS Einstein may have been disconnected from the collective and thus unaffected by the Caeliar, but I do not think they could have assimilated enough beings in the time between the novels and STO to be a threat.

I would consider STO to be soft canon. At startrekonline.com, the developers made a timeline graph to depict where in the prime STO takes place. Interesting stuff. Having played STO for some time, it was interesting to see where some of the minor characters in the universe are. For instance, the character of Thomas Riker (Will Riker's twin) Last we saw of Thomas, he surrendered himself to Cardassia and sentenced to a labor camp. Fast forward and his character was revealed to have organized the remaining prisoners and established a self sufficient colony after Cardassia abandoned the prison camps. As for novels and such, forgive me, but i haven't read any, so my knowledge is lacking compared to others who are more informed. Little details like that do keep my interest in the game. Oh, and where Worf and his story in the game is a nice touch.

My biggest problem is how the Borg come back after Destiny. i wish this would be resolved, as well as janeway's presence in the book. Martin knew Janeway was dead in the relaunch books, so why put her in the STO book?

I think you can have whatever canon you want. Ultimately there's so much out there to play around with.
Not only for Star Trek Online, but if you think about the new movie, or every episode where they go back in time, it's all changing history. So really, canon is what you make of it...
Otherwise, STO can be dismissed as purist canon because it's a video game, and just because you had Leonard Nimoy talk a few lines when you're crossing into other galaxies, doesn't mean it all fits together neatly with 100's of years worth of fictional history.

They try very hard to be cannon. I believe it's 20 or so years after the last TNG movie. They give little bits of info about various people. Picard is ambassador to Vulcan. There's another war with the Klingons, so Worf left the Federation, etc.
