Why weren't Klingon Birds of Prey painted Grey?

Canon means what we see and hear from the episodes and movies themselves, not from producers or writers or directors. What they say may have been intended, but if it doesn't make it on-screen, it's not canon.

Besides, it can't be canon that the Bird of Prey in ST:III was stolen from the Romulans due to the fact that it IS canon that Klingons have been using Birds of Prey a century prior to those events.
