Guinan's Super Powers

In "Q Who", Guinan confronts Q and holds up her hands like she is about to cast a spell or something.  Q actually looked a little threatened and told Picard he should cast her off the ship.  Do her people have some super powers I'm not aware of?  Or do they just having "good listener" powers?

She was El - Aurian and they lived a long time, they could travel the galaxy long before humans, and were a prime target of the Borg.
The non - canon works have expanded a bit on them, but very little was ever said on the show.

Remember - Guinan could also sense a disrupted timeline in "Yesterday's Enterprise" and a piece of her remained in the Nexus

As you say, part of her remained in the Nexus, so perhaps she drew some special powers of some kind of which Q was wary. The writers might have intended to give them some kind of adversarial background story, but they never did (as far as I know). Christopher Bennett's book The Buried Age tells some interesting history between Guinan and Picard that might shed a little light on her biography.

On second thought - It might be that Guinan was just about to wring his scrawny neck.

Most likely scenario. I think the writers may have had something in mind regarding Guinan's abilities but never expanded upon them, so all we are left with is her advanced age. Who knows what she was really going to do to him. No one really knows how they know each other and why the dislike.

Of course, if you ask John DeLancie, he will tell you they had a bad date.

Whoopi's schedule made it difficult for them to include her regularly on the show, so they could only make broad hints.

Seeing as the moment Q lost his abilities there was a line of aliens coming after him, it is likely that Guinan was tormented and teased like the Calamarain.

I have always wondered what was going on with Guinan. Q said that Picard had no idea what this creature was. I wonder what the writers were making her out to be. They obviously abandoned whatever track they were planning on taking her character.

So this dyslexic walks into a bra...

I really wish they would have done more with Guinan. Yea, she did appear to threaten Q, but if she was that powerful, how did the Borg destroy her world?

Exactly, but maybe its better that her people remain mysterious, especially with the mysteriousness of the Q taken away. Of course, if they were super powerful, you'd think the Generations villian would have used those powers to get into the Nexus.

Exactly, Matthias. They may have had a bad date and she might have wanted to wring his neck, but I don't think she had any super powers, other than being an exceptional listener. With someone like Q, that might have required super powers! But, I liked Q most of the time.

I do not think the El - Aurians were super powerful, but they did seem to be long lived and have the ability to explore the galaxy far earlier than the other races in the Federation. It would be very interesting to explore their history with the Borg.

I suppose that the writers could have chosen not to explore that angle of Guinan's character in order to retain her mystery. Perhaps they wanted to keep us wondering... after all, I think that a great part of Guinan's allure was the fact that we know very little about her.

But if they did have powers to rival the Q, why did Soran need to blow up stars to re-enter the nexus?

Exactly. I think the bottom line is, when Q & Guinan saw each other in Ten Forward, they overplayed it (AKA screwed up.)

It's a good point made by Roboto - Guinan's mystery was part of her appeal. The two part episode "The Best of Both Worlds" shows this elusiveness. Picard is assimilated by the Borg and Guinan comes to Riker and says she has always had the Captains ear. Riker doesn't understand that and she asks if Picard ever mentioned how they met. Riker doesn't know and Guinan doesn't explain, but she gives a wise glance and nods sagely. She has Riker's ear then and advises him. It's a telling scene on Guinan's powers I think - not supernatural like confronting Q (overplayed I agree), but something deeper in her species to always know how to approach someone and help them in times of trial. It's more than a therapist/patient or bartender/client thing. Her species seems to have an ability to see what someone is thinking/behaving before it happens - this ties into her knowledge of Q perhaps. I would love to know how Guinan and Picard met. Any theories?
