Why is the bridge on starfleet ships aways on deck1, dead center of the saucer section? Peter David repeatedly mentions in New Frontier that you might as well paint a target on the ship saying "Shoot me here." On a modern ship, this is done for observation purposes. However, on starships, there is no observation deck and all visuals are done using sensors, so shouldn't the bridge be in the center of the ship in a heavily protected section so a phaser or torpedo shot doesn't imediately kill off the command staff and decapitate crew function? I'm a traditionalist, but I feel this oversight is a major design flaw.

ive always noticed that too. i wouldnt want to be on the bridge during a battle. its the most vulnerable spot on the ship. have you noticed on every show that you never see part of the ship outside the windows

Maybe having the bridge on deck 1 is a sign of power, it is the more important deck after all.
They have two settings: stun and kill... It'd be best not to confuse them. ~~ Lt. Reed

Yeah, I wouldn't risk the command staff to make a point.

If I'm correct the bridge has added shielding and we see on Enterprise that the Klingons reinforce the structure. So it may be a prime target but getting through is another matter.
If you can read this it means I've got something to work on here.

By that logic, why don't we put bomb/storm shelters on top of houses, just enforce them better than the rest of the house?

At least this is a weakness that both Star Trek and Star Wars shares. Ships in Both Universes put their bridges either on the top of the ship or at the very front. Battlestar so far is the only one I've seen that hides the bridge way down in the forward middle of the ship.

This answer is dead on the mark, much like the Ood in Doctor Who.

With sensors and the main viewscreen, there is no need to place the Main Bridge on Deck 1. It looks like an inviting target, although (theoretically) it is protected by shields.
Diplomatically, it would seem to be more impressive to lead a visiting dignitary through a labyrinth of hallways, before arriving at an internally located Main Bridge, like an inner sanctum.

I really don't think aliens would judge the ufp warlike because they have internal bridges any more than they would find someone with a short haircut more warlike than someone with long hair. I found the ood to be something that would neither evolve or be created cause the design makes no sense, like a deck 1 bridge. Besides, after you lose several ships to targeting bridge domes, eventually the admiralty would say, "to hell with this!"

i'm sure the bridge is reinforced with extra armor and shielding.

You know what makes REALLY good extra armor and shielding? A few decks above it. That's what we in engineering call redundancy.
