>So you can have 9,999,947 posts and stay an ensign because you haven't uploaded any pictures? I don't mind taking it all into account, but I think everything should be given the same weight.
agreed

Me too!

Yeah, I don't have the chance to upload photos of like, a trip to a convention because in New Zealand there are no conventions that I'm aware of, and I don't exactly have the money to travel to America for one convention.

Man I wish I'd known about this rank thing before I chose my username "LtCdrBall" now I just look like a douche. lol Damn, and I just realized that unless I get to LtCdr and stay there I'm gonna look like a douche again should I attain a higher rank later on down the transwarp corridor. Wonder if I can change my username?

I understand how you feel - just look at my screen name.

But I feel that even if I get to Fleet Admiral someday I will keep the Lieutenant Moniker as sort of a homage to my humble roots, just like "Colonel" Green. Lol

Childish? Really?  I do not see what is so juvenile about being rewarded for heightened board activity.

Interesting. It appears the few people who have any complaints about this system are ranked Ensign. I see a correlation here. . .

*shrug* To each his own, I say.

I'm happy to participate with fellow fans and I don't care about the ranking one way or the other. If it doesn't being down the experience, who cares, it's clean fun. If it meant something, all the better. Then I, as the only commander could say "vote MR, that's an order." Because there is no democracy on a starship.

It would be cool if there was more of a benefit to the rank system. Maybe the higher your rank the better a discount you can have at the store or maybe that can be how to unlock the other shows for viewing. they can reward us for participating by unlocking episodes and such and maybe if you are an admiral you could even watch the movies.

So this dyslexic walks into a bra...

I agree advocate. If the ranks led to privileges, then you would see more individuals trying to climb ranks.

Oh and by the Way MR, Brother of Shran is also a Commander, so you are not alone.

I don't think the rank thing is childish and I may have the rank of 'Ensign', but I don't think the rank thing should be the end all and be all of the site. For some members, those that are NOT spamming to increase their rank, if it makes them happy then fine. But there are some people that will become somewhat obsessed with increasing their rank and they will end up spamming the site in their determination to 'move up' in the ranks. In that respect then the rank can be seen as 'childish', IMO.

Now in no way am I calling anyone childish nor am I putting down anyone with a higher rank than 'Ensign'. I've been a member of ST.com since 1998, I remember the chat rooms and I've made many, many friends and have even seen some of those friends die in the years since, one died this year.

I've even participated in an online wedding ceremony in one of the chat rooms! Many happy memories! But never have I worried about a ranking. If others like it and care for it, then more power to them, just please don't go crazy to get to the next level is all I ask ^_^

Anyhoo, I don't believe in the ranking thing, but as long as people don't go crazy or overboard in trying to increase their rank then more power to them. Although, maybe there could be a way for those of us who don't want to participate in the ranking thing......there need to be civilian advisers/workers, maybe instead of being an 'Ensign' I could instead be 'Civilian', 'teacher', 'professor', or even perhaps 'civilian adviser'. It'd be great if we could have the option of not having any rank if we choose it, or to be given the option to be given the rank of 'Civilian'.

That's just my two cents tho. I'll drop my pennies into the jar on the way out

Thank you for your view CO Fowler. The ranking system is nothing more than a measure of your overall activity on the the site. For instance if you were to post ten pictures you would likely be a commander, or if you were to comment on ten news articles. In fact it would be interesting to me to see what your rank would be just by commenting on one news article.

I completely agree with you!

Do not get me wrong- I am not saying that rank here is really all that important, and rank is certainly not the only factor in what makes a member a "good" member. I for one do not think I am "better" than a member who has been here over 5 years and has 20,000+ posts. Not at all! For me, the ranking system just gives me a little more incentive to check here every day, to write a more thoughtful reply when I am thinking "Ehh, do I really want to bother?". For me personally, rank just makes things a little more fun.

What just annoys me is when people go about saying how stupid and pointless the system is. My attitude is "Well, if you do not like it, that is perfectly fine, but if other people like it and are taking advantage of it without spamming and making idiots of themselves, it certainly is not pointless."

And there is nothing wrong with staying as an ensign!- I certainly did not mean to infer that.

Your board experience is like a Trek career... you take it where you want it to go. If you want a higher rank, you go out of your way to find interesting photos to share in the gallery, or comment on news articles, whatever. If you are perfectly happy to simply post on the boards and remain an ensign, that is perfectly acceptable as well. You do what you want and what makes you happy. Is that not the point of being here?
