What does my 'rank' mean and how do I get to the next level?

All StarTrek.com users begin as an Ensign when they register and can improve their rank by actively participating in the various sections of the site.

The rank is determined by:

     1.  Number of message board posts AND

     2.  Number of photos uploaded to the galleries AND

     3.  Number of comments on the site

More Activity = Higher Rank

Who can climb from Ensign to Lieutenant, Commander, Captain, Commodore, and Admiral.

And who will be the first to achieve Fleet Admiral status?

What about assassinating my superior officer?

So how does someone with 4 or so posts become Lt.j.g. , someone with 10 or so posts become Lt Commander and others with varied numbers, anywhere from single digit to upwards of 6 or more digits, are still Ensigns?

Or has everyone been set back to Ens? I just got back on this morning so I haven't looked to see if those that yesterday were higher ranks with lower numbers are still that way or not.

Thanks for the explanation, tho

post count only counts how many posts those people have made on the boards. They could have hundreds or thousands of uploaded pictures into the gallery or comments on the main site.

So you can have 9,999,947 posts and stay an ensign because you haven't uploaded any pictures?

I don't mind taking it all into account, but I think everything should be given the same weight.

I'll stay at Ens, then if you have to post pics. Since the change-over I've only figured out how to post one pic and I think that was a quirk of luck or fate LOL And I'm not going to spam post or spam comment just to get a higher rank. So that leaves me at Ensign. No biggie to me, really

But thanks to Admin for explaining the rank system, it's just not going to work for me tho

Peace!

I was an ensign until I uploaded photos today from Chicago's ST convention... and look, now I'm a Lt. Cmdr! Go figure!

the "report this" button should be removed also. some people will use it just because they don't like someones opinion.

I must disagree. Do not get me wrong; I am not saying this simply because I managed to get promoted; this was my opinion before I rose in rank.

The whole reason a rank system is created is to encourage more activity- in this case, more posting, more sharing of interesting pictures, etc... in other words, it is meant to bring life to the forum. If it created more spamming and nonsense posting- basically, more harm than good- then it would have been abolished by websites long ago. Obviously it must work to SOME better end or it would no longer be in use anywhere. It's purpose is to act as an incentive to do more on the site. Can it be abused? Sure. Any kind of feature on a website, online, or in real life can be abused. To say that a ranking system on a website is a bad idea because it encourages people to spam is like saying that the use of the internet encourages people to spread porn to wider audiences, or that the invention of the phone encourages those like telemarketers to bother us more. To some extent, all of this is true... but the usefulness of the invention far outweighs the negative results- that is, misuse by other people.

Can people get an over-sized ego and down-talk other members due to their "rank"? Sure. It can happen in real life in a real-life job situation. It is not right, but then it is the job of the moderators to keep those people in line. And honestly, I have yet to see anyone on this website treat any member poorly just because of his rank, so unless someone can tell me that they know of such an occurrence here, then I say that it's a poor example.

And the removal of the report button? Really? So it is better to remove it and let all kinds of trouble-makers run amok with no way of stopping them? I doubt it.

(Just my two cents... hope I am not stepping on anyone's toes.)

I'm all for fun but this may cause some people to spam the whole place up.

but now hopefully people won't be flooding the galleries with unneccesary pictures just to increase their rank. the pictures should only be of star trek. Collectibles, props, uniforms, and/or star trek conventions or star trek art.

Well it definitely gives people the incentive to be more active on the site/boards. But as other people have said, hopefully there won't be a lot of spamming.
