I think we need a pm system here and I can't even imagine how they could release this board without one.
I would love to hear other people's thoughts, especially those who are against a PM system. I just can't imagine people not wanting one, especially the admins/moderators.

Yes I do. Why not? Many reasons to catch up and say hello in private where a person may not feel comfortable expressing that on the boards. If anything, it keeps us on these boards longer. We're people, and not just a messageboard. Perhaps the reasoning behind Admin or CBS to defunct the pm system can help us to understand why it has gone?
PM has helped to solve issues and clear things up between the posters involved, unlike it is now.
Hi JOY btw.

Hi Ture.
One person already voted "no" which is fine. I just would like to know why he/she feels that way.

Yes. Saves topics being taken off topic which would stop certain members running round pretending to be god and report anything slightly off.

Hi Joy.
A person is entitled to their choice.
The PM system has been used against people, but I see it more of a positive than a negative. It give's dignity and expression and personalisation on a privacy basis. Why shouldn't we have this?
The PM system should be available.

Hey Ture - great to see you; haven't chatted for a little while - hope you're well?
And back on topic, the above comments emphasise why we need a PM system. I consider Ture a friend, but can no longer have a one-to-one conversation with her on these boards without (what others would describe as) 'derailing a thread'. This creates a new problem in itself since there are some on these boards who actively seek excuses to submit reports against other members and are happy to use what they perceive as thread derailment as another excuse to do so. |
Hi Shuttle.
Let's not take this away from JOY; most of us would agree to have a PM system, but how many of us are around here?
I agree with you, but what can we do to "improve" the 'status quo?' What I have seen is that negative posts goes against and not for us here. I hope that we will keep the dialogue open between members and admin, and perhaps find a medium of sorts.

As of my 'Yes' vote the count stands at:
Yes - 10
No - 3
Other - 0
The Pros of a PM system/function far outweigh the cons of a PM system/function. The only reason I could see why someone might be opposed is that perhaps those people are ones that want to see everything and always be a part of the converstaion or will/like to use the report function to scream that a post is off-topic simply because someone says "Hi" or "How's it going?" to someone else.
With a PM, people can chat with each other thereby not going off-topic in any given topic and they can also clarify something about someone elses post(s)/topic(s). Which would then lighten the load on Admin in that there would be less posts going off-topic and maybe even less posts/topics having to be totally removed/deleted becuase one post might be offensive or violating TOU/TOS

You have no disagreement from me. PM's have been exploited, but we do have the initiative to stop it. We don't have it now, why don't we try to get it returned?

Although that function is available, that is not the primary reason for pm.

Hi Joy. A person is entitled to their choice. |
I completely agree, which is why I said one person have voted "no" and "that's fine." I guess I just can't see any reason not to have a PM system. I've always found it to be a very positive thing. The only time I found it negative is if I received a PM from someone I'd rather not communicate with. In the past, you could block anyone you didn't want to receive PM's from, so that would also be a feature I would like to see. But I was just wondering why people are against them. That's all.

They have been used to abuse people in the past and also invite unsavory types. Pms. could also be used to pass private information on to others, where this might be the reason for it not being available?

A PM system can't invite unsavory types as it only works within the board, it cannot go outside the site. And the whole point of the P(rivate) M(essage) system is to allow people to converse privately. |
I'd like to agree with you, but it's not true. Conversations can be saved past their useby dates and copied elsewere. They could be forward on to third parties. Sure there are ethics, but those ethics don't apply to all posters. I've had hideous things sent before. That is why I had a strict protocol of privacy with pms. I try to protect people's message's to me, unless they are dangerous or illegal. You ask any poster here? A poster confidentiality means a lot to me.

A PM system would be useful. It is a standard feature on every message board system (that I've experienced at least).
It is just an easy way to contact other members without cluttering up the boards. Members might also want to exchange information that they otherwise would not want posted publicly (within the ToU of course).
