It began with Beltran's joke, apparently. He told Ryan. Who told Braga. Since Ryan and Braga were dating at the time... Fill in the rest of the story yourself. (This story was told by RB in one of the Voyager DVD extras. Of course, he was smiling, so it's kinda hard to tell if he was serious or not.) It also has probably have something to do with the 'Voyager Wars'. Just to keep him quiet, methinks.
And C7 is THE most IMPLAUSIBLE couple of the show. Seven is a six-year old with the brain of the collective, for frak's sake. The only possible pair for Seven is The Doctor, actually - he's technically four years old when Seven came onboard, with the brain of the Federation Medical Database. On the other hand, Chakotay is 52 years old during year 1 of Voyager.
Also, Seven is almost the same age than Harry Kim. Kim is 20~ years old. Talk about pedophilia - he's old enough to be her father!
And since Resolutions and Q and the Gray were some of the episodes I watched first (I didn't watch in order), I shipped J/C very early on.
PS: And I read way back that there was a slow build-up between Chako and Seven. I see it as a Father-Daughter relationship. She's in conflict (Human/Borg); he WAS in conflict (Maquis/Starfleet). |

The fact that they became a couple didn't bother me in and of itself. You don't choose who you fall in love with. Being on the senior staff together they spend enough time together that they could have developed feelings.
What I didn't like was that we weren't shown anything leading up to it. We saw one episode where Seven was on the holodeck and "Chakotay" was there. Since after that there was no more mention of it, I always just assumed he was a peron she picked to practice being human with. But then there was an episode where they wree stranded on the plante together. Surely there was a chance to start showing some sparks between them. But now
If they had just shown the two of them interacting a little more, talking more, eating an occasional dinner together it would have been easier to swallow.
Plus as others have said they simply had no on screen chemistry.
That's one of the things I loved so much about the Tom and B'Elanna relationship. We watched them grow from barely tolerating each other, to become friends, to developing a flirtation, to dating, to married with a baby on the way.

There was no Janeway/Chakotay relationship. They might have had a slight flirtation going on, but she made it very clear to him that she was not interested in a romantic relationship.

Here's what should have happened on Voyager:
Seven/The Doctor
Paris/Torres (well thank goodness that DID happen)
Janeway/Chakotay
I don't know but that's just my opinion. (:

I cant even think about seven/chakotay, it makes me sooooooo angry. There was nothing there. AT ALL, I am a hardcore JC fan! that's what should have happened. specifically in RESOLUTIONS! I have to stop writing because im getting so angry. It was a last minute thing, just to add something!

Resolutions was a completely different situation. They were off the ship, not in a command structure, and for all they knew they were spending their lives there
But on the ship, it's a very bad thing for a captain to be romantically involved with a subordinate officer. this was also explored in an episode of TNG

Unlike most/all people here I can see 7&C: 7 would asses a "suitable mate" logically. C would fit her requirements since he's proven himself in many ways. She is not formally in the command structure why his rank is not a problem. Further, 7 is beautiful but also scary to most men with her totally non-feminine approach. She's twice as strong and ten times as intelligent as any man on Voyager... and she knows 1000 times as much. Not all men can deal with that, to see her "inner" beauty. I say C is one of the deepest and most sensitive man aboard.

I don't have a huge problem with the actual pairing, I just don't like how it came out of left field. They got from never talking, to suddenly being in love. I just wished they had shown a little bit of the build up, that's all

No no NO! fact is, it was a last minute idea they threw together, when I found out about 7&C, it was like a bloody ambush, I thought i must of missed an episode or something, there was no relationship or bond between them that would have even hinted towards a relationship!
now if it was harry or the doc id be like "yeaa you see, i thought their was something there" instead of thinking "where the hell did that come from"
