Now I know the Akira was designed to be a type of future aircraft (fighter) carrier. That being said, in the Dominion War, you rarely saw Akiras and small fighters. Never has an official fighter carrier been used in Starfleet nor do you see one person fighters.
In naval armadas, the focus was always to build bigger ships with bigger guns, but in WW2, capitol ships switched to being primarily aircraft carriers. Modern navies are built around aircraft carriers and their fighters and smaller missile frigates.
That being said, should the starfleet capitol ships be primarily battleships with big guns or fighter carriers? Which do you think would be more valuable in space fleet combat?

That is a good question. I think each ship should carry a squadron of fighters. So there doesn't need to be a ship just built to carry fighters. Starfleet should have ships with big guns and fighters.

Probably somewhere along the line in the book series(I'm sure someine is already thinking about it) they will have troop ships and small fighter craft because of the Dominion War and what happened with the Borg. Besides, when they create new enemies new things will have to be developed as well.

unless i'm mistaken I think there is, isn't there the scoutship and the Delta flyer and the Runabouts that more or less fill that roll, but more specically those ships the Marqus used starfleet fighter craft type vessles???

In one of the novels with the characters Piper and Scanner there was mentoon of (And a diag) for the "Arco" atack sled and "Pollywog" one man fighter. ALso in the various games fighters/carriers are def used.

There are small fighter. I've seen the scematics and read about them. However there are no carriers and thuis is due to the fact that Starfleet is not a purely military operation. If they had carriers then it would enforce the image that some of the other races wrongly have of Starfleet i.e. being a conquering invasionary military force.

I'm not sure why myself, but Starfleet isn't the only one with them. Klingions have them and if you have seen Nemesis you can see the Romulans have them too.

A swarm of fighters might be harder to destroy than a capitol ship because a big gun with a lucky shot could destroy a big ship but would not destroy every fighter in a wing. Fighters would also be more maneuverable and difficult to target. Also, a fighter can carry few powerful torpedoes so you don't need big, expensive capitol ships for your fleet to have a punch. Ever see the voy episode 'swarm'?

Trek is maybe the only sci fi that doesn't heavily rely on fighters in battles. Star wars, b5, and bsg all used fighters alot.

Fighters do not fit within the socialistic message that Star Trek conveys. They do have the pergine fighters but they are far to large to easily be carried abord anything smaller than a star base.

I've noticed the fighters in many battles of the Dominion War weaving about the fleet and it got to me again that starfleet (or macos) need carriers. How about we have a fan design competition?
