Hello everybody. I'm formerly known as Whitestar7 and now I'm KnightInExile. This site has just upgraded and for some unexplained reason I was forced to change my username.

Has anyone experienced something similar?

I noticed that we don't have the option to PM each other and that pisses me off. Also, despite the fact that this site has a more visual appeal, I think it has taken a step backward.

What are everybody else's thoughts about the upgrades on this site?

I'm new to the site, and I agree with you, that the lack of ability to pm another mem is a negative. It's something I am able to do at two other sites, and, if one doesn't want to even have a direct way of contact, they can do so. I am sure plenty of fans would like to be able to share things privately about mutual interests, and whatnot. Seems to me a step backward, if this was so before. I also weary of the way a person's replies can end up forcing one to scroll way down the page. This is definitely something that needs to be corrected;it just makes participation a little irksome and takes more time to go through past posts. Remedying that would be a big service to everyone, IMO.

"Has anyone experienced something similar?"

Yup...that is why I am now caltrek2. Were you a member in good standing prior to "the great change"?

"I noticed that we don't have the option to PM each other and that pisses me off."

Actually, I am happy about that feature. The backdoor politics over at Ten Forward was getting way out of hand. On top of which, I always felt compelled to keep people's personal PMs to me confidential. I didn't mind some of the more friendly ones, but toward the end it was really getting nasty and even threatening. Hence caltrek2. I simply got tired of worrying about my friggin post count. Now the site has started over...and so have I.

Yes, I was in good standing, which is why I find this most odd. I take it you were in good standing too?

Well, I agree with Kesfan who said that fans should be given the option to share things privately about similar interests and other non-Trek related things as well. I also have something else to complain about: how come the most recent postings in any of the sections of this site are displayed at the top instead of the bottom? That is sooo retarded. This site has definitely taken a step backward.

Well, I was a member, but not in good standing. That is why I asked the question.

What happened was that my posting privleges had been revoked.  I really don't blame admin,  as I said I was really geeting tired of deleted threads, requests that I not respond to baits etc. Those requests did not come from admin, but from others who were trying to target certain individuals for banning by reporting them to admin. They actually expressed sympathies for my political opinions, but had apparently developed grudges against other individuals. PMs certainly had the legitimate usage that you describe. Unfortunately, many seemed intent on abusing that usage in order to attack  certain individuals.

I am sorry that I am not being any more specific than that. As I said, being PMs, these were communications that I treated with a certain sense of confidentiality. I feel like I would be violating that sense of confidentiality it I were to be more specific. Moreover, being more specific would possibly just re-ignite the whole problem of the "banning wars". At any rate, the use of PMs was being abused. If that is why admin has modified that feature, then the rest of you are being made to pay for the abuse by a few. Again, I wouldn't blame admin for that, but I would blame those that abused that feature.

Until last night I didn't even know the site had been redesigned. I just thought it was really outdated looking.

I wouldn't mind having a PM system here. All the other boards I'm a member of have them. They make it easier to keep in touch with people and you don't have to risk giving out your e-mail till you're sure you can trust someone.

So I have to give out my e-mail publicly if I want to get in contact with anyone from these boards? Isn't that dangerous? How do I know that someone isn't going to use it sign me up for some sort of spam or e-mail me a virus? I'm not on that many messageboards, and only just recently joined here. But every one I belong to has a personal-message system so we don't have to reveal our e-mails in the public forums.

No you don't. Most if not all of us are members of more than one board and if they want to use PMs and not give away their Email address, then they use PM elsewhere. So - a PM system here is not needed.

So what you are saying, unless I want to give out my e-mail publicy here, I have no way to contact the membership privately without resorting to joining several other boards? Sounds phishy to me.

If you don't want to use a Personal Message system, that's your choice; but some of us would like to have to have that choice. Why are you trying to recruit people for these other boards?
