Ok I have noticed this more on DS9 with the Ferengi and Quarks bar, but how do Federation crews pay for things since acording to Picard in ST10 they no longer have a need for money? It may have been discussed before but I have been away fo a time.

The most rediculous aspect of STAR TREK
was that they don't use money, anymore.
Ha! Yeah ... of course, they don't.
It was nice to see DS9 try to correct it.

Exactly. As I said elsewhere, how else to interact economically with Non-Fed powers like the Ferengi, or the Bajorans? I think that the intention was back when to stress that, in the future, ,ankind had placed the acheivement of wealth as something that had been reduced, and as Picard told Lily, ''We work to better ourselves'', and the creation of the replicator enabled, like so many things have since the earliest of then-advancements, indoor plumbing, or electricity, to revolutionize, and help improve quality of life-the main goal in twenty-fourth century Earth, and beyond-for all. It's been discussed elsewhere, that there would probably be patents held, still, on inventions, and thus, I guess, royalties/profits to the creators of same...but, the IDEAL at least in the modern Trek era is that money is, while still used to 'grease the wheels' of an ever-growing society, is not as important as the values of freedom, and self-determination for all beings.

If it were even possible for humans to not be
in a money-based culture, we'd be living in it,
after The Great Depression. Seriously. When you
take away personal gain, and just hand everybody
what they need to survive, what you get is a lot
of foot-dragging, ghetto ho's with their hand out.
We all know how Russia turnd out and that was maybe
the closest thing to that. And your'e right Kesfan,
I can see how in the future there might not be a LOVE
of money. But even STARFLEET uses "credits," come on ...
While we can evolve, some things are just hard wired in us.

Sure.Money, as you said, is INCENTIVE. Humans are most variable in how we think, act, live. Some work more to survive, while others do something as a passion as well....like actors, who in a lot of cases, see more 'salad days' than ''wine and roses''.....

I always envisioned that StarFleet paid the bills that Starfleet members charged at Quarks or on Risa.

There were those Federation credits... That's Federation currency. Of course there would be currency exchanges; ie 10 credits equals a strip of latinum. Mind you it could be possible to replicate gold pressed latinum...

Guilty as charged: fan fic writer. Go to Ad Astra and search for the author Ln X or the series DS9: a continuation. My fan fic stories are on that site.

This is an issue that has been inconsistent... they have a Starfleet/Federation credit system as it has been talked about on occasion. But then they turn around and say they are not a monetary based society anymore. Whatever. In the Fed the credit system is probably all computer controlled so no you no longer need actual cash. Out on the fringe they will want hard cash and I have to assume that you can somehow change Federation/'Fleet credits for cash somehow... Biometric ATM maybe

This is conjecture with a liberal splash of opinion but it fits.

Brilliant dialogue:

"There's nothing wrong with our philosophy. We work to better ourselves and the rest of humanity."
"What does that mean exactly."
"It means... It means we don't need Latinum."
"Well, if you don't need Latinum, then you certainly don't need mine."

The ironic thing at this point is that -- actually -- the reason for this exchange is that Jake DOES need Latinum.

I kind of like that this sort of snubs the initial vision of a currency-less future, while not going into copious amounts of detail in order to explain how it works.

Have you ever danced with a Tribble in the pale moonlight?

I took it to mean that the Federation doesn't use money per se internally, but they have currency (the "Credit" was referenced more than once) for trading with other cultures. Plus, DS9 was a joint Federation/Bajoran station, so the Bajorans may have insisted that currency be used in some form.

I've noticed in the Trek universe, most of the time, there is no money. However it has been known to crop up when it's conveniant lol

The "we don't use money" thing is where
STAR TREK and the human condition say "adeu,"
and enters solely into the realm of fantasy.
Even Cocharan invented warp drive for money
(and women, but where there's one the other's
present, as well). Most doctors and scientists
expect to be well-paid. That's not in our nature.

I've always wondered this myself especially with the drinks and food at Quarks that federation officers get on a daily basis. It was something that was never fully explained. It was always vague. I'd like to know for sure.
