So on a recent episode of 30 ROCK we hear that one of the characters grew up on the corner of 157th Street and Lt. Uhura Avenue.  I suppose I should have expected that Tina Fey would have heard the nickname, but never expected it to show up on the air. Let me explain "Lt. Uhura Avenue":

The actual name of the avenue is Convent Avenue, a street in Upper Manhattan in an area called "Hamilton Heights".  Not to be confused with Washington Heights, Hamiliton Heights is a hill completely surrounded by the neighborhood of Harlem and is considered a part of Harlem.  Convent Avenue runs along the top of the hill (vaguely parallel to upper Broadway) and is lined with beautiful townhouse going back to the days of the Harlem Renaissance of the '20s and '30s when Harlem was home to the most wealthy and influencial of African-Americans of the time (as it is becoming again). The Hamilton Heights area never quite experienced the economic lows that the rest of the neighborhood did in the intervening decades, and as it was positioned up on a hill where it could be seen from all of the rest of Harlem, it epitomized that striving to reach the top of the hill, to "get to the promised land". For many African-Americans in 1960's Harlem the only face on Television who represented someone who "got there", someone who reached "the top of the hill", someone who could actually live on Convent Avenue - was Star Trek's own groundbreaking Lt. Uhura.

Hence, Lt. Uhura Avenue.

As a Real Estate agent for my day job (when the acting jobs are scarce) I'd heard the expression and always got a kick out of it... never did I imagine a New York inside joke would show up on National TV - but then, I suppose I should never underestimate Ms. Fay and her writing staff either!

Okay, YESTERDAY image posting worked. Today I've tried four different ways and I get blanks. Sorry folks, I WANTED to show you the gorgeous townhouses, but I can't. Try copying this link and using it... SHEESSSH! Couldn't post my own photos of Convent Ave, from my own camera either directly from my computer OR from a service like photobucket... so, I'll give you a link to a place on line you can see someone else's pics of the street. And you'll have to copy and paste.
