One thing along the lines of Jon-and especially Trip, who suffered so personally because of what Degra created-is that both men rose above their anger at what had been done to earth, and its people, and were able to come to terms with this Xindi, the architect of their loss-besides the Sphere Builders, who duped Degra in the first place. Once Archer was convinced that Degra was so manipulated, he found it in himself to work with him. The handshake between them in Jon's Ready Room, and the scene with Trip and Degra down in Engineering are two that remain with me alll this time. That took a vast amount of courage, and shows their basic decency as human beings. All the st captains would have risen to the occaision, of course.I think that S3 needs a lot more credit, have to say, than it sometimes gets.I also think that fans who haven't liked STE and who haven't seen it all, should give this material a hard look, and see that the series does indeed earn the merit for characters of depth.

I agree about S.3, Kesfan. While I see the argument it was gonna be hard to have the Romulan War when it WOULD have happened, later in the Series, having already has this season-long conflict, it DID accomplish something in the direction of Federation-forming: look at the irony! They go after the Xindi who are attempting to utterly destroy humanity, but in the end, they end up SAVING the species by cleaning up the Expanse and destroying the Spheres! unraveling all the deception along the way. This turnabout MUST have gone a long way towards establishing Humans as a basically peace-keeping species, even if they had to kick a$$ to do it.

And it takes a unique leader, with the strong mind, capable to thinking creatively and logically, and a fierce heart, protective as well as combative, to accomplish such a dichotomous feat.  Archer epitomizes that leader.  And Bakula was perfectly cast for that role.

TRIP:I'm only kidding. You look nice like this. Kind of like an old oil painting. T'POL:I'm not old. I will only be sixty six years old on my next birthday. TRIP:I can't believe you told me that. T'POL:You accused me of looking old. TRIP:That's not what I mean. I've been trying to get you to tell me your age since we left Spacedock. Why now? T'POL:To Vulcans, certain information is considered intimate. TRIP:Intimate?

Nice Yanks.

And agreeing with Scoobs, those of you who know me know me well enough to know I've dissected the Archer character and its faults and some of the jerky writing when they didn't know which way to go (trying to see if an Archer/T'Pol match-up would fly? are you kidding? even the actors knew it was a bad idea, ipso facto absolutely no chemistry in the "dream sequence kiss"!), but those who don't just have to take my word for it that I'm not merely gushing when I admit, first time I heard they were gonna make Bakula a Trek Captain, I went, YEA!!!

Now, when I heard Mulgrew was replacing Bujold, I DID go, Yea! And of course back when Stewart was chosen as Picard, it got a YEA!! But Bakula--so relatable, so familiar, so down-to-earth, same as the time period--that got a definite YEA!!!

And that's how THAT went down.

I think on the whole Bakula did a good job with Archer, although I have in the past criticized his anger scenes.  But he did a good job in portraying his other scenes, and I give him very high marks for his speeches in Damaged (as I call it the 18 speech) and his speech shown by Yanks.

BTW grigori I think the entire ST universe applauded Mulgrew replacing Bujold, GOD she was horrible in that part.

That, and I KNEW that Mulgrew had the strength yet warmth to pull off Trek's first female captain without the writers turning her into some kind of a cliche. That's a definite danger--here's an ostensibly sexist statement, but I could back it up--in that happening when men write for women. Trek has suffered from thinking they needed one of each "type" of woman in the limited main characters alotted them, whereas the male characters can be developed in any old direction.

Except, of course, Travis...

HEY--Shatner says it's about six months before his documentary THE CAPTAINS comes out, where he interviews Stewart, Brooks, Mulgrew and Bakula with a note of retrospection on the phenomenon of BEING a Trek Captain. Looking forward to it.

Archer rules! He seemed the most realistic of all the Capts because he was constantly getting his ass kicked! But he got the job done! Plus ya gotta love anyone with a Beagle!
