What Star Trek might need...

Hey everyone.

I think what ST really needs is a major overhaul.
And not just another Timeline-Interference as in ST XI.

There was always too much stupid / unlogical stuff around.
So I present my ideas for a NEW STARFLEET:

1) Field of Duty & Colors:
The Star Fleet really needs some clarification on color:

Blue - Science (Medical staff with white additions/coats)
Green - Technics
Yellow - Security
Orange - Away-Teams
Red - Bridge-/Commanding Officers
Purple - Pilots (Shuttles & Fighter - Capital ships?)

2) Only the Commanding Officers are Officers in its real term, ranging from Ensign (just out of Academy) to Captain (many years of experience).
They form the main chain of command (except maybe the Ensigns)
Every other section only hosts non-commissioned officers.
So for example the Heads for the Technical and the Security Personal (Chief of the Boat / Chief of the Watch).

The Away-Teams are direct subordinates of the Captain and are usually briefed by the Commander.

3) The question is:
Do I REALLY need full officers at Helm and Sensors?! I actually doubt that.
But then again, what roles do we put all those LCs, Ls and Es?
Maybe they SHOULD lead the Science, Security, Technical and Away-Team staff after all.
Maybe they cicle through all stations to learn the ways on the ship, or they have already specialized in SF-Academy and work their way up from their chosen field to Bridge.

Hmm... I'm not so sure about that.

4) Anyway. The one thing that really MUST be changed is about the Away-Teams.
There must be specially trained troopers for missions like reconnaissance or infiltration of unknown or even hostile environments (like ships, stations and planets). Only AFTER they have secured the area, a commanding officer might follow.

5) The real problem with most Star Trek series is, that it only focuses on the Bridge-Personal as main actors and that led us all the way down to the "Red-shirt-phenomenon" and the above mentioned Away-Team-unrealism.

I really think a new ST series would profit if their would be several non-bridge characters getting their time "on air".
A logical choice would be the primary Away-Team (Alpha) that's regulary send onto dangerous missions.
But maybe some science and technical staff or pilots could make good lasting characters.

6) I ALMOST FORGOT THIS:
Ok. I might not be that secure in all this ST-Background, but if the Star-Fleet is the Military branch of the Federation,
Where the heck are all the alien influences?
And mean not only Alien crew members (anyone counted that BTW? I'd guess one Alien on about 100 humans?)
but also alien influence on technology and design.
The Federation ought to be an Alliance of dozens of races. But if you watch the series you might think of it as well as of a pure-human society with some view aliens visiting.

It might be fine, that humans tend more often to Starfleet service, but not like the way it is.
(Sure I know, make-up etc. do cost and take time, but B5 has managed that so why can't ST?)

7) AND OF COURSE:
A real storyline from the very beginning. I think we all had enough unmotivated "trekking around" with each and every episode being completely unimportant regarding devolopment/evolution of main story OR characters.
The moment where every Star Trek series actually shined where the episodes in which exactly that was accounted for.

I mean no disrespect, but most of this stuff is superficial and surface-detail. I don't think the changes you've mentioned would add any quality to the franchise or show, with the exception of the idea of having some non-bridge personnel featured.

Otherwise, this is much ado about nothing. Rank structure? Away-team composition? Colors of shirts?

I'd rather see focus more on things that matter to audiences.

No you are right. Several of this is quite - what was your word - superficial.
But I would call it BASIC too.
And I know that I am not the only one bothered by this.

But I almost forget one major part that I will add to my post above: ALIEN INFLUENCE.

man what trek needs is a good balance of story/action. Sci-fi fans like action/story not technobabble in which TNG-VOY basically is. ENT had less technobabble but for a show that took place before TOS they had technobabble on the level of TNG. so yeah just a good story and lots of action will do.

The uniform and rank aren't essential but it's like wall color, how different hues can produce affect. But I must say I don't like most of those color choices, but I do like the idea.

The idea about emphasizing non bridge crew is excellent, the chief medical officer and chief engineer do often get left out.

You're right about away teams too, if I remember correctly back in Kirk's day in addition bridge crew specialist were sometimes included on away teams.

Non-human officers were highly underrepresented on Starfleet ships for much the same reasons a you said and I think it effects the authenticity of what they are they try to convey.

It doesn't need a major physical change in appearance; if you want that just watch the latest Star Trek movie. It's about ideas, and how to develop the Star Trek universe. Without naff timeshifts...

Advanced technologies are one of the most attractive side of the show... ST is a SCIENCE fiction after all ^_^
