Let me start by saying that TNG the later years was a work of art, I loved it, but the first 2 and half years was... God awful at times. The representation of Q's powers was ¿ freezing and flashes of light. Crosby overacted Yar making her seem loud and excessive, like in that courtroom scene when she attempts to defend the Federation. Troi's tears and staged girlishness with the dress seemed like sad throw backs to the 60's female characters. So easily overcome, unable to control her response to her empathic senses. I'd almost call it insulting. No Chief Engineer, you have a bunch of low ranked bridge crew but no Chief Engineer. Worf skulking around the bridge with no specific duty ready to shoot the view-screen like a fool. The blind pilot, how cute, who got sent on away missions when no other helmsmen after him got sent on away missions and was sent handle issues in Engineering. Picard seemed gruff to an extreme, distant and discourteous without redemption until Measure of a Man. The Star Jellies were well... I know they were just starting out, things to be ironed out and all that but non of the other series had issues like this, so many things that seemed over looked or half done. And as a whole DS9 did more to develop Worf and what it was to be a Klingon than TNG ever did.

Agree for the most part, the series got off to a rocky start for me too. I even stopped watching every episode after the first couple episodes premiered. All that Wesley tinkerbell music!! I didn't really get back into it until "Best of Both Worlds".
I thought TNG did just fine in developing Worf's character though. Otherwise, he wouldn't have been such a welcome addition to DS9.

2 AND A HALF seasons of poop??? No way dude, gotta love season 3's beginning, 'Evolution', 'Who Watched The Watchers'... etc.
On the other hand, in my mind, season 5 onwards the show started to loose it's greatness...

That episode was alright. And then after that... it was just painful; if you could take poison by just looking at; then seasons 1 and 2 of TNG did just that. I just feel sorry for the actors; I could see them struggling through poor scripts and poor stories; painful man. Mind you there were some good episodes: Datalore, Conspiracy, The Measure of a Man; they were good.

Funny to read this.... Just yesterday I started my big rewatch of all Trek (except for TOS and ENT) with this episode (duh). And I share most of your thoughts. The acting, plot and effects were hilarious (although it WAS 1987)... And after that I watched the beginning of "The naked now" and I laughed out loud. But knowing it'll get better and better will keep me in front of my TV

It only get's better from season 3 onwards. Season 2 is notably less painful... not better, less painful... hey! Maybe that is an improvement!

Don't forget, "Q Who?" was in the 2nd season.. That is one of my favorites. The 2nd season also contains the worst season finale of all time. After the 3rd season, the writing was much better, and more consistent.

"Q" (ELIZABETHAN) Knowing humans as you do, Captain, would you want to be captured helpless by them? (moves closer) Now, go back or you will certainly die! "Q" (ELIZABETHAN) Your little centuries go by so rapidly, Captain. Perhaps you'll understand this better.
"Q" (MARINE CAPTAIN) Actually, the issue at stake is patriotism. You must return to your world and put an end to the communists. All it takes is a few good men.
PICARD What? That nonsense is centuries behind us! "Q" (MARINE CAPTAIN) But you can't deny Captain, that you're still a dangerous, savage child-race.
PICARD Most certainly I deny it. I agree that we still were when ... (indicating) ... humans wore costumes like that four hundred years ago...
"Q" (MARINE CAPTAIN) At which time you slaughtered millions in silly arguments about how to divide the resources of your little world. And four hundred years before that you were murdering each other in quarrels over tribal god-images. And since there have been no indications that humans will ever change .....
PICARD But even as far back as... ! (indicates) ... that costume, we had begun to make rapid progress.
"Q" (MARINE CAPTAIN) Oh? Shall we review your "rapid progress"? Then later, on finally reaching deep space, humans of course found enemies to fight out there too. And to broaden those struggles.... (indicating Worf and Tasha) .... you again found allies to permit still more murdering and the same old story all over again.

To be fair, all it had to do was set up the show and the characters. It does an OK job of it, but it's probably the weakest of all the Trek pilots.
