Filed under the category: You don't know what you've got till it's gone. Back then you could kick back and watch new episodes of SPACE BASED science fiction almost any day of the week. Star Trek DS9 Star Trek Voyager Babylon 5 Farscape Stargate SG1 Futurama Now what have we got? Stargate Universe. There is a lot of SciFi today, but it is mostly earth based shows with little to none of boldly going to new planets. Yes, Dr Who is sort of like that, but it is more about time travel and alternate dimensions. I guess these things have a cycle to them (like the sword and sandal craze Hercules, Zena, etc. that has dried up, thankfully) and maybe the theme was just played out. When oh when will the wheel turn back to space faring SciFi??? Thank goodness for DVDs.

Correction: The title should read golden era OF SciFi, Not ON SciFi. Imagine my embarrassment.

Well, apparently, Caprica's ratings haven't been that great.
And a space-based spinoff of Ron Moore's BSG is in the works...

Agreed on the whole. I do like CHUCK, which is "big" in its own way, and is sci-fi, but it's NOT "big" in a "sci-fi" way. And I like "Warehouse 13", but it's admittedly not "big". Well...I do like the new Doctor Who. Hm. Yup, the great days have past. But I'd argue that 88-90 was even better in ways...TNG, Quantum Leap, Alien Nation, Max Headroom--well, I liked it, anway. The old DW was winding down. Sylvester McCoy had one well-written season, then a season that closed the show.

That show is more like; sword, sandal, sex, and slash!! I wouldn't mind the sex, but from what I've seen, the slash/gore is just too over the top for my delicate tastes.

I thought Caprica was the BSG spinoff. Are they really planning another? "Please sir, may I have another?"

I thought that I didn't much care for SG1, having only seen it sporadically and out of proper order, but right now I'm watching all 10 seasons straight through, and it is much better than I'd remembered. I'm in season seven now. There is an episode, "Space Race" that is amazingly good. Better than much of ST. Granted, it is a complete rip-off of a Voyager episode, but they do it much, much better, so I'll overlook the plagiarism. And I throughly enjoyed all most all of Atlantis, season one being my favorite.

Ha. Maybe I didn't make myself too clear there. Caprica seems to be failing, both in the ratings and from negative buzz/word-of-mouth that semi-realistic planet-based drama just isn't as exciting as BSG's much-loved space-based suspense. In fact, Caprica is only halfway through its first season, and there have been no talks to secure a second season. Sooo... Syfy is apparently in talks with Moore et al. to try to get another space-based spinoff of BSG moving toward production. Of course, please take all of this with a grain of salt and note my use of the words "seems" and "apparently." Details are still sketchy at this point.

Yeah cutting off faces with a hook and using it as a mask isn't exactly family viewing.

I've not been impressed with Caprica, but the final mid season episode did spice things up. SGU had the same problems, but ended strongly.

Stargate's probably my second favourite Sci-fi show, and it's clear to see that the makers used Trek as a template for it's success. Atlantis is a good sequel, but too much messing around with the cast and using the same aliens spoils the show to a degree....... And Ronon can be annoying at times.

I'm tired of all this realistic "nuts & bolts" sci-fi in Darky dark Mcgrimdark settings. I want useless flashing lights and tubes of neon with lasers that go pewpewpew. But no monkeys in daggit suits and annoying children.
