Guinan: Guinan HAD wisdom. What did yappy Troi have? An arsenal of pyscho babble that would either bore you stupid or want to make you cry...

I never did like many of the episodes revolving around Guinan or Troi.

I'd say, El-Aurian Big G for the win... her advices for Picard in 'The Measure of a Man' and 'I, Borg' blows Troi away...

Troi. Guinan gave advice and put things in perspective, but she didn't let you work through a problem by yourself or gain knowledge about yourself. She was a good friend and bartender, not a great counselor.

Troi's pyscho babble was just plain irritating. I'd go to Guinan any day; I'd prefer wisdom and some sharp cutting words than pretend sympathy and pyscho babble.

If I had to choose which one I preferred to talk to, it would be Troi. She seems kind to me, while Guinan seems kind of stuck on herself and how smart she is all the time. It irritates me a bit how they wrote her: absolutely perfect, she always knows what to say, she's so witty, blah, blah, blah. She's inhuman to me. (Of course, she is an alien, but shhh.)
I don't hate her character. I hate none of the characters in Star Trek, but Troi seems more easy to relate to then Guinan does and more real. Although the whole being able to read my emotions thing would make me feel uncomfortable.
And I agree with the post that Haventgotalife said. Troi is patient and she'll work out problems with you over a long period of time. Guinan tends to give you quick and good advice, but nothing more. After that, she's done.
I don't think Troi's sympathy was pretend either because you know, unlike Guinan she could actually feel people's emotions directly.
Although me and my brother do make jokes about how the dress code for being a counselor on Picard's ship is "You can wear anything, just make sure there's some cleavage."

the answer would most likely vary from person to person if the people being counselled are anything like real life people.
what works for one can drive another up a wall.
a method that provides enlightenment to one type of person can be oblique or annoying to a different type.
we would have to know the results troi and guinan have to be able to make a call on this.
the closest one could come to an accurate answer to this question is who is actually the better counselor to each of us answering the question.
most days for me it would be guinan.
however
many is the day i can see troi as being the most beneficial and even necessary for me.

Argh! Your poetry winds me up no end! Seriously counselling and poetry do NOT mix.

Guinan, except for when it comes to humor (TNG The Outrageous Okona). Data would have been better off with *Worf's opinion on comedy.
*In Peter David's Imzadi II (IIRC), the incident with Data pushing Crusher overboard (ST:Generations) came up and Worf told him "...that was damned funny."
