Quote (Quantumflux01 @ June 12 2010, 5:42 pm)Quote (stovokor2000 @ June 12 2010, 9:57 am)The Tal Shiar did not know much about 31 at all.The only one that did was actully working for 31.
That someone was Koval, and he's the head of the Tal Shiar (well according to the TNG book Rogue). I don't think he's working for Section 31, whatever was indicated in DS9, but instead had some sort of deal with Section 31.
Not to sound rude but, having "a deal" with someone is working with that someone.

And the episodes supersede anything that comes from a book.

Well yeah... But Koval was head of the Tal Shiar in the episodes too -- Inter Arma Enim Silent Leges. And he was working for / with 31 to set up Cretak. *oops forgot the spoiler alert again*

Oh. And 31 isn't pure evil as much as it is one of those organisations that does bad to protect its own perceived version of good. In a way it might even be a commentary on the dangers of unbending patriotism and unyielding moral views.

Section 31, Slone, my faverate bad, not so bad guy charactor, the guy you like to hate, how ever short lived is one of the more interesting aspect of DP9, The nessesary evil.

Makes the ever so clean and righteouness of the Federation a little dirtier.

We now know there out there watching our backs or to back stabb us for the good of the federation.

I attended the Bill Sadler session in Vegas this year, and while I'm not a Niner per se, it was a nice experience, and interesting. I asked him if they gave him anything at all on Sloan's background; he said that they gave him nothing, that he had to actually call up to the front office, and ASK what the guy's name was, 'Luther'...of course, that does make sense, being he is such an enigma on screen..LOL, Bill said he said at the time, 'I can work with that', but, you imagine most actors prefer to have something to hang their hat on, as it were. He referenced Sloan's first appearance, sitting in the dark in Julian's quarters, and IOW chilling, and significant that was. I've always remembered the statement Sloan made to Bashir about their organization doing what they did, looking out for the Federation, so that everyone else could sleep soundly in their beds....It was interesting to see S31 back in Enterprise-and wow, the revelation as to just who had-technically was, still a member, and having the group at work during the pre-Federation decades.Yeah, as JamesSpock said, we got a bit of a shock in DS9....Sisko's initial comments about the group demonstrated how well they had maintained their anonymity, and kept themselves ambiguous...Come on, who doesn't enjoy a little black ops/spy stuff?.....

That's a great story, Kesfan. Awesome.

Yes it makes perfect sense not to know more about Sloan than what is revealed on screen -- which is very little of course. One of those things -- curious for more information but on the other hand you would really not want too much to be revealed.

Section 31 is more like Starfleet black-ops, remember? Sloan kidnaps Julian and then tries to recruit him, and sends him on "missions" and also they are responsible for the Changeling disease... and so on.

Do you recall now?

Section 31 are mean! I think they have only 3 episodes in DS9 but those episodes were some of the best. It was pretty cool in ENT as well.

Section 31 plausible? How many people know that George Washington had an intelligence network he paid for out of his own pocket? Many people know about the Soviet Union KGB and the GRU but how many know about the Comintern?

I'd say very plausible.

Will sector 31 is basic black ops that mostly hide UFP intellagnce that explain how come no one know about them. More intrest fact sector 31 no centure headquators. However have some labs own order design boilgiical weapon systems they used Domimion. They also once most likley design phase cloaking device.

Very plausible. They wouldn't allow defectors and they have no ties to admirals and starfleet.

They’ve given away their humanity with this genetic manipulation… Many of the qualities that they breed out, the uncertainty, the self-discovery, the unknown, these are many of the qualities that make life worth living… well, at least to me. Section 31 seems to be a vehicle for unauthorized activities, such as obtaining cloaking devices and assassinating opponents. In one novel, it even participated in a coup (or coup attempt).
Having a few secrets might be accepted politics, but this kind of an extra-legal, unrestricted (protected by its secrecy) violates the spirit of the Federation and pulls the UFP down, to the level of more-barbaric organizations.
