A few members of these forums insist that a new tv series cannot be made by cbs for at least a few years (or was it five). Is it forbidden via a contract or is it an unofficial agreement between the two Viacom owned companies? I talk to Leo Roberts the executive producer of Star Trek Phoenix often enough and this was said in an e-mail with him.

Thank you.  What agreement are you referring to regarding CBS and Paramount?  CBS and Paramount are both owned by Viacom and no agreement that I'm aware of prevents CBS from creating a new Trek series.  Its all up to JJ Abrams, as the head of CBS has given full reign of the franchise to Abrams.

There's a big error right off the bat there.

Paramount Pictures is owned by Viacom...CBS is not. CBS and Viacom are both ultimately owned by National Amusements.

According to the person I heard who had gotten the info from inside Paramount Pictures, part of the agreement between CBS and Paramount was that CBS would not put a new TV series on the air for at least three years from the release date of ST:XI in order to avoid unfair competition.

Abrams does not work for CBS, he works for Paramount Pictures.

:logical:

Based on that math, though, if three years after the release of STAR TREK we could have a series, wouldn't someone be starting to work on it right about now?  Even if it was just pitching ideas? We are already into the 2nd year of that 3 year period so someone might be thinking about it.

If they are smart, they won't even start looking at anything until AT LEAST after the next film has run it's course in the theaters...and they will take an additional 2 years (or more) to develop the show.

There's no reason to rush. I'd rather it be done RIGHT and timed properly than have them put out yet another cookie-cutter series.

I don't believe any of this without a link to a legit news story, preferably one at Popular Mechanics.
