I rented MegaFault on BluRay and they mentioned Phase Canon in it. Maybe B&B did research future tech?

Haven't seen the movie, but from the reviews, it looks like BB would rather not be connected with that movie.

I would also guess that the movie used watching Trek for cheap technobabble research.
