Wow, I really stirred up a hornet's nest!
ST09 was a good story. I hope we can agree on that. A similar plot, however, could have been developed in a post nemesis setting with new crew. Abrams makes entertaining movies, he could have made it work, he is a talented man. To say it required kirk/spock I think insults abrams.

I cannot accept it was a prequel any more than I would accept a story about 6 year old alternate universe me in my biography. Alternate me is not me. I would, however accept it as a sequel to nemesis, partly by virtue of ' countdown'. It also continued the nemesis nature versus nurture concept.
I think most of us fans don't understand why no one in hollywood will give us 24th century prime universe back?

Why does every generation of teenagers think they are so much more enlightened than the previous? Teenagers have always felt the same, only the circumstances change. Who didn't think adults underestimated them when they were a teenager?

> They could have done a new crew in any setting. I am quite sure any movie set in the 24th century would have probably done much worse than Nemesis did in the box office.
I don`t believe this for a minuit, the younger generation do not know who Kirk or Spock is, They wouldn`t care who was in the film, as long as it entertained them. It could have been in 24th century the 25th even the 21st, for them it was just a space film with action, nothing more, to them the word Star Trek ment nothing, I`m sure that galaxy Quest to them was just as entertaining.

Well I do think your not giving the younger generation a chance. MOST of the younger fans that I know and have met that have become Trekkies/Trekkers/TREK fans have almost immediately turned to someone they knew who was a TREK  fan to learn more or revisited previous series and movies to learn more. The majority of those in turn have learned to appriciate TOS, TNG, DS9 and the like and see TREKXI for the very average TREK movie that it is.

What I`m saying is the younger generation would not care if it was Kirk, Picard, or joe blow, if they like the movie, they would probably still turn to some fan to learn more or not. So a 24th century or other would not affect thier turnout.

I think it most definately would affect the turnout. Kids hear their parents and other relatives talk about the shows they watched growing up and based their opinions in part on those of their parents.

Don't under estimate kids these days..

Absolutely right!

Kids will go see "Transformers" because of the name and the "brand recognition" aspects...but I doubt they would have turned out for "RoboChangers" in the same numbers.

Marketing and brand recognition are CRITICAL to today's movie goers.

Anyone who thinks otherwise doesn't understand the industry.
