The movie was designed to be nothing more than another summer action science fiction flick. And in doing that the story and writing were secondary to the action and special effects to bring in money.

If anything if CBS does do a new series they should just ignore everything that is JJ trek and move on as though it never even existed beyond trying to bring money into the wallet of Paramount Pictures.

It totally disagree with everything you just said.

Why?

That's exactly what Paramount did to CBS. They completely ignored everything that is Star Trek just to do their own thing. Why should CBS not do the same thing? Completely ignore everything that Paramount has done to bring back the true timeline?

Having Paramount literally hand over the Star Trek franchise to JJ Abrams and Bad Robot has completely screwed up everything in the Trek universe from this point on.

If CBS goes back to the original franchise do you think all these noob Trek fans from the movie will follow and understand one single thing that is going on? NO. All they care about is who is going to be the next American Idol or crap like that.

And if CBS decides to follow the "new" Trek timeline then what? That means that the last 40 years of Star Trek mean nothing?

JJ didn't ruin Trek. He adhered closely to canon.  He just created an alternate 'beginning' to the storyline in a different universe ......... or at least I'm hoping that's what he did.

He's a Trekkie above all and he think he has more respect for this franchise than to just demolish it and start over.

Actually JJ Abrams is NOT a Trek fan he said it himself. Until writing the new movie he had never even bothered to watch any Trek. If it was not for a couple of token Trek fans on his writing staff I'm sure this movie would resemble even less Trek than it actually did. JJ Abrams said he wanted this movie to have a more Star Wars feel to it. So if that is being true to Star Trek than i want nothing to do with it.

I saw an interview with him where he said he was a Trek fan.  Not as much of a geek as we are but still a Trek fan.

IMO the only way he will EVER be able to redeem this series and fix the mess he has made is if at some point the final movie in the Paramount series or before the final movie they fix the timeline thus allowing a new series to be made so there is no contradiction in cannon and production.

I don't think it's a mess at all.  I think it's an opportunity to bring in fresh new fans and fresh new stories.  I like it.

Well, I see it this way. If they make a series in the JJ-verse it is going to be an all new Trek in this all new universe that has noting but similarities with the original. Why? Because the point where Nero and Spock came to visit was already drastically different. Different birthdates and events prior to the Nardia's arrival. The fact that they all had deltas on their uniforms is just ONE indication, one is all you need to prove the point.

Either way, if there is to be a series that takes off after NEM, Romulus must have been destroyed, and Spock presumed dead, or lost at the least. If they ignore that happening then it is to say that the JJ-verse is seperate and alone and that the Spock Prime we see in Trek XI is not really the Spock we know.

You see these universes can't be separate and alone. They have or had Spock and Nero Prime in them. So if they make a series that takes place after NEM, Romulus must be destroyed or not only was Star Trek 2009 another universe, Spock and Nero were from a universe we have never seen, in addition to all the rest!

Either way you look at it, unless they pick up a series or movies based on the post NEM or NEM/Destruction of Romulus "prime" universe it is dead! You may go to the grave yard and visit it via your DVR, DVD, VHS, books etc... but it is effectively dead.

The good news? Because of JJ Abrams, we have Star Wars like Trek. It's fun, but not what a lot of people really want. Most of us will live with it though.

They can't make a new series until they figure out what is going on in the Trek Universe, we can thank JJ Abrams for that mess.

I'm all for a new series, as long as it's not a reboot of TOS, set it after the TNG timeline :logical:

A series in the New Time line or Separate time line.. would be awesome!

It would be interesting to see what else they would change...
They could start with a new ship and crew easily enough.. since it would be so hard to keep the current cast.

Using a separate timeline would be cool. It would open up a host of new storylines but at the same time it would be complicated to pull off given the history of timelines and alternative timelines throughout trek
