Every time I hear that the U.S. is a Christian Nation it makes me want to throw up. The only people to settle in this country that came for relgious reasons are the Puritans that landed at Plymouth Rock. They were basically kicked out of Europe for being crazy. These people were the Westboro Baptist Church of their time. Most people who came to this county in the late 16th century and early 17th century came to these shores for profit!
In 1585 Sir Walter Raliegh and Queen Elizabeth I wanted to establish a settlement and base on the Carolina Coast so they would have a place to mount raids on the Spanish ships that sailed off the coast to catch the easterly trade winds back to Spain.
Others that arrived to build a new country were promised land and wealth. So you see this country was not created for relgious or Christian freedom, it was created to make profits for England and the Queen.
I work as a Historical Interpretur on Roanoke Island, the site where Sir Walter attempted to start a settlement in 1585-87 and the look I get on some people's faces when they ask me about coming here for relgious reasons and I have to say "Nay, I'm here for profit!" It really throws them for a loop, some try to argue and they mention the puritans on Plymouth rock, then I have to explane they were chased out of Europe for being loony! I then encourage them all to read their history and do the research.
The U.S. is not a Christian nation, if it was I'm sure all the Jews, Buddist, Hindu's, Muslums, Atheist, etc would have been run out by now. But no the United states is a country for all relgions and beliefs, all relgions and non-beliefs are equal in this country which in my opinion makes this the greatest country in the world.

Not again...

I think what you heard was this country was built on Christian principles...

...and it was.

:eyesroll:

And what would those be?

You know, the things that distinguish Christianity from, say, Judaism?

And this relates to the OP how?

Does one have to be Christian to be an American?

No. I'm agnostic. I'm a combat vet who joined the service because of my patriotism.

I was actually responding to Jack.

My dad was a Korean War vet, Marines.

And Jewish.

Funny how his service (and yours) somehow doesn't count to these folks claiming this a Christian nation.

Forget it. You don't care anyways.

Actually I do.

You know, being an American and all.

You made the claim.

Now prove it.

Give me some Christian principles that this country was built on that are unique to Christianity.

As the crickets chirp.

Once again, conservatives make a claim then can't back it up.
