All flights in and out of the UK and several other European countries have been suspended as ash from a volcanic eruption in Iceland moves south.

Up to 4,000 flights are being cancelled with airspace closed in Norway, Sweden, Finland and Denmark among others.

The UK's air traffic control service (Nats) said no flights would be allowed in or out of UK airspace until 1800 BST amid fears of engine damage.

The airspace restriction was the worst in living memory, a spokesman said.

Nats suggested that the restrictions were unlikely to be lifted after 1800, saying it was "very unlikely that the situation over England will improve in the foreseeable future".

Passengers were advised to contact their carriers prior to travel.

They are saying that airspace will be back to normal at midnight then the NATS says it's highly unlikely and will be closed for the foreseeable future. No one knows WTH is going on.

No. According to the weather it's going to completely cover the UK. Early afternoon it has hit Scotland and Northen England, some reports say it has hit Cambridge now.

Just seen the news on BBC 24 and they have been grounded as well. People are resorting to ferries from Ireland to UK and Scotland.

Bet it makes for an interesting looking sky...

:logical:

Some parts of the UK will get a "red sunset"

The ash is likely to lead to particularly red sunsets in some areas

Doubt I will get it here in the south will probably be less dense down here.

Unless the volcano is still going. They say they think it's still is erupting

Just asked my friend in Belfast what the situation is there.

:logical:

Sitting looking out of a window at Queen's library I see a typical overcast sky.  Whether this is a result of the eruption I don't know, we have had very clear skies the past few days, but there doesn't appear to be anything unusual about it.  Both Belfast International and George Best airports are grounded for the time being.
