The second half of Never Ending Story (book) was changed around far too much when elements of it were used in the film. Like in the movie having Bastian lose his memory was a plot from Xayide the witch. In the book it was just something that happened naturally as making more wishes led him further away from "reality".

It was my favourite book when I was growing up. I liked the movie, but it was far from being my favourite movie. The book of The Never Ending Story was really clever and I loved the idea of "Fantastica" ~ not Fantasia as the movies would claim. First movie ends about halfway where the book goes.

If anyone would ask these days, I would recommend reading the Never Ending Story (by Michael Ende) not watching it.
