Just because (a) I'm curious and (b) people generally dig this sort of thing...

What Trek series/films do you own on DVD?

For me, the Trek in question has to be GREAT in order for me to purchase a DVD set, which I fully intend to watch over and over again.

So I own the following Star Trek series on DVD:
- TOS - all three seasons (original format, not the remastered editions)
- DS9 - all seven seasons
- the Borg fan collective set

I also own the following Star Trek films on DVD:
- TMP
- TWOK
- TSFS
- TVH
- FC
- ST XI

And that's it.

Also, I should point out that even if I had the material wealth of Scrooge McDuck, I still wouldn't own any more than this. I am perfectly content with my Trek collection as is.

So here's the "why:"

I grew up with TOS (in syndication) and absolutely love the spirit and feel of those episodes, not to mention the creepy-cool vibe. And the Kirk/Spock/McCoy triangle is one of the best buddy combos in TV/film history.

DS9 is simply the most well-written, masterfully-produced Trek series of them all. It features the best plotlines, the best characterization, and the best special effects sequences. The subject matter is mature and thought-provoking. And unlike many other Trek series, it increases in quality as it goes along, much like an intensely rewarding rollercoaster ride.

The Borg episodes are sometimes great, sometimes not so great. But they are seminal works in Trek lore. And to not have Best of Both Worlds on DVD would be a crying shame.

For Star Trek, the First Four films are easily the best. TMP is just a brilliant and beautiful science fiction epic done in a two-hour timeframe. And the Genesis trilogy is just fantastic, exploring themes of age, loss, friendship, and conviction. First Contact and Star Trek XI are probably the two best "popcorn flicks" in the franchise, as they are both loads and loads of fun.

And there you have it, folks.

Who's up next?

DS9 - 1-7 box set. Because it's cool.

TNG - 4-7 box set. Because it's cool. (Oh all right I started buying tng season 6 because I was curious about Bashir being in the Birthright episode.)

TNG - magazine edition dvds with probably about half of season 1-2. Because that was available fairly cheaply. And it looked cool.

MOOFIES: Generations, First Contact, Nemesis, S.T.2009 on DVD. Because it's cool.
...And also Insurrection on my ipod.

Ent: 10 episodes from Season 1 on VHS. Because they happened to be available for total $10 at the shops. And it looked cool.

the end.

Ha. "Because it's cool" is probably THE best answer to the question "why?" anyone could give.

Just curious... What's a magazine edition DVD?

I own:

Blu Ray Season 1-3 of TOS.

DVD Boxed Set Seasons 1-7 of TNG.

DVD Boxed Set Seasons 1-7 DS9

Star Trek 1-10 on Special Edition DVD

Star Trek 1-10 on Blu Ray

Star Trek 11 on Blu Ray

Why do I own them? Because I like to watch them. In the case of DS9, I only saw about 1/3 of the episodes, so I'm "rediscovering that series."

I have no plans to own VOY or ENT on DVD or Blu Ray.

TV: Seasons 3 and 4 of TNG. That's the one I grew up with, and those are its best seasons, I think. I'd get them all but I'm a cheapskate, and I've still got VHS tapes somewhere! Also the Time Travel Fan Collective, which looked like the best selection of episodes for a good price -- City on the Edge of Forever, Cause and Effect, All Good Things, Trials and Tribble-ations.

Movies: Only Star Trek I on DVD, which is my favorite of the lot, but the rest (II thru VI, plus First Contact) are on VHS somewhere. I had Nemesis, for some reason, but recently sold it since it was crap.

Just the movies right now. The boxed sets of the series are way overpriced!

We have all the movies; my favorites are I,II,III,IV,V,VI, parts of GEN, and most of FC.

We own season One of TOS remastered we are going to get the rest. I have the whole series minus a few episodes on DVD that I transferred from old VHS I have from recording it off of the TV.

We have all but season 7 of TNG, we just have not gotten 7 yet but we will.

We have TAS DVD set, I am loving every minute of it.

Voy: I have a few I recorded off of the TV about ten episodes, and one I bought off I-tunes because Sulu was in it. I will buy more as I am told by friends I trust that I will like them, don't really care for the show as a whole though.

DS9: None. We are going to see if the library has them and try them out, see if we can get into them, if so we will buy them.

Ent: I have season one on DVD from tape recordings and don't have any plans to buy any as it stands. I am willing to give it a try in the future because some say season four is good, but I have no plans now.

I've got TOS, TNG, DS9 and VOY on DVD.

And all of the movies, ST:TMP through ST:NEM.

As for "Why:" well, it's Trek.

I grew up watching TOS and got hooked.

I think the shows have faults, and I like some better than others, but it's all good.

I just recently bought the VOY series set and am watching that again. I like it better now than I did when it was on and I gave up after the Second Season.

I even feel like giving ENT another try. Wait awhile and let the DVD prices go down a bit.

I did the exact same thing with DS9, but I got the complete series on DVD for Christmas and I've been watching it now. I must say, it's kind of cool having "new" Star Trek to enjoy.

Give it a shot.

Also: I forgot to mention in my post that I also own TAS on DVD.

Give it another go if you get a chance. As a series it definitely lends itself more to DVD than to weekly TV screenings, I would say.
