Why was Decker demoted but not Spock?

When Kirk assumed command in TMP Captain Decker was temporarily reduced in rank to Commander, why was Spock not reduced in rank in the same manner in TWOK when Kirk assumed command?

In both cases Kirk was an Admiral, and going back through naval history (to which Star Trek was patterned) it was not uncommon to have an Admiral and a Captain on board ships at the same time.

Thoughts?

I think in doing that they were trying to assert Kirk's authority. To show that he wanted command and to let the audience know the HE was in command. It was symbolism. In TWOK situation was different, so they did not need or want to assert Kirk's authority over Spock to the audience.

In TMP Kirk was put in command of the Enterprise by Starfleet, and given full control of the ship as its captain. Decker had to step down.

In TWOK, Kirk took an academy training ship out for a little cruise with its captain (Spock) on board. When things got rough Spock let Kirk take command, and since they were friends there was no need to resort to regulations and official procedure.

KIRK: I'm replacing you as Captain of the Enterprise. You'll stay on as Executive Officer. Temporary grade reduction to Commander.

The whole "Decker reduced to Commander" thing was unnecessary. No need to reduce him in rank. #1 Kirk out ranked him anyway, and #2 even if Decker was senior to him, Kirk would have positional authority as Captain.

That's what I thought Yanks! There was no need for Decker's demotion since Kirk outranked Decker anyway.

Kirk felt a need to assert his authority over Decker. I think that's part of the dressing-down McCoy gave him after their discussion with Spock.

Kirk should have thrown him off the ship for that tantrum Decker threw.

maybe he should have abandoned him on an ice planet.

It's because Decker had like 3 kids and and a parish. And on top of that his wife was trying to save some whales. Decker had his plate full and so Kirk was really doing him a favor.
