Why did Denise Crosby leave the show?

Was it her decision? I've always wondered.
I've seen interviews with her, but it was not made clear.

I suspect she regretted that

I'd leave if I had to do Code of Honor.

I've always thought that the writers had no idea what to do with a woman as chief of security so they didn't work very hard developing her, but that's just my theory.

IMO, none of the characters really shined in the first season. It's too bad she didn't have the patience to wait and see where the show eventually went.

Its so sad that she left. If she had stayed Tasha and Data would have been perfect couple.

Ditto. I think she was impatient. Youth and eagerness probably played a part too though.

If anyone had a reason to leave during/after season 1 it was Marina Sirtis, who probably had the least screen time, and was just as underdeveloped save for one episode ("Haven").

On another note, I met Denise, Marina and Brent Spiner this weekend at San Francisco's WonderCon! They were all incredibly friendly and seemed genuinely happy to be there, which I guess surprised me considering how long they've been doing these kinds of appearances.

I really think that turned out for the best.  The character of Tasha Yar had very little to offer from an interest standpoint.  she was a orphan on a war torn planet who joined starfleet and kicks ass.  Its the same character as worf just female, and there wasn't room for both of them.  the character of worf, being an alien, had much more potential, so much so it took 11 seasons to explore it all

There's no reason they couldn't have developed her character.   I think it's silly to hold out Worf as an example of a character with so much more potential for development.   I've been marathoning DS9, and have been struck by how little there really is to Worf.  He eats up enormous amounts of screen time, and provides a good excuse to do good stories that explore Klingons in general...  but what more is there to him, really, than a tough, anal-retentive, grunting character without much personality?
