I'd love to see a updated "Thing" but the way things are just now it's best left well alone.

Really? You don't think that, by doing all of the assimilation scenes in CGI (which they're bound to do) instead of the awesome physical effects by Mr Genius Rob Bottin, it'll totally destroy the charm of the whole thing?

The Thing is one of my favourite films, and the reason I like Kurt Russell so much, every thing about the movie is just class. Some good CGI could do a remake justice but no way anyone could reproduce the awesomeness that blew me away in the early 80's.  :logical:

Have you seen the 'making of' that comes on the DVD? I am seriously awed by Rob Bottin after watching that and finding out how he did some of those effects.

It's such a shame that CGI is so 'easy' these days, because I think it stops people from being clever and inventive (not that I'm saying CGI artists aren't skilled or clever...I just wish there wasn't such a reliance on the art to the exclusion of all other methods). Like how, for the scene where the Norris thing eats Copper's hands, they used a real amputee victim, wearing a mask of Richard Dysart. Brilliant!

God, I could talk about this film all day, lol.
I agree with you that Kurt Russell is just awesome in it...it's my favourite role of his by far. In fact, all of the cast is just perfect.

I also love the music...that opening piece, starting off with just that one note pulse, is totally epic, and sets the mood for the rest of the film.

Lol, I'll stop now!

It's actually not funny, MG...posters are getting banned/suspended in record numbers.

I even got a warning yesterday. No box but a warning just the same.

:logical:

Sorry sb63, you misunderstand, I was responding to Mrs Starbuck. Yes indeed your post is serious and things have indeed been fraught around here lately. I try to never respond to trolls as soon as I identify them as such, it's a waste of my time. On these boards I would rather spend my typing time talking to folks I like.

The thread was moved by our new startrekdood555. I presume all non-Star Trek movie topics have been or will be moved as well.

Rules and guidelines are being interpreted strictly as written, so therefore the Movies board will be only about Star Trek and Star Trek related movies...

Which actually it always was, but some people started to think it was for any movies.

Also, in light of events on other boards here at st.com, if someone is spamming or trolling, do not engage the spammer/troll, hit the report button, make a report and walk away. Anyone who responds to a spammer or troll may find themselves warned, suspended or even banned, as some have found out.

Protect your accounts, stay safe, ignore, report and walk away.

This has been a Public Service Announcement from your friendly neighborhood sb63...

:logical:

I vote we lock spammers and trolls in the shed with Blair ;)

Sorry, I'm not making light of the situation either SB, but I said ages ago to just ignore certain trolls and not feed them the attention they crave. It's the only way to get rid of them.

As for people making threads about other movies on this board, I know I've been guilty of that too, but you do get a different response to things posted here compared to on 10F.

But if admin is now clamping down I guess we'll all have to behave ourselves more.

Good CGI can look incredible, but sometimes going "back to basics" can't be beat.

It also makes me sad that Rob Bottin hasn't worked on a film for years, and according to imdb, his last job was "special animatronic cow and bull effects" on Serving Sarah.

Come back Rob, hollywood needs you! ;)
