Panto villain?

Pantomime is theatre for children. It's full of OTT characters and melodramatic acting especially from the bad guys.

The Daleks and Cybermen predate Star Wars, Garak. The Borg were even inspired by the Cybermen.

Besides, it's not the look of the Daleks, it's the attitude and that staccato reverb voice that makes me all wet.

The look definitely contributes though. They're the only major sci-fi aliens (certainly from TV) that actually look alien. The design is iconic.

I know they predate both Wars and Trek but they could do alot better in the 21st century. Trek changed the look of the Klingons to reflect better technology, I am just saying they could have done that with the Daleks and the Cybermen.

They've changed the Cybermen a lot down the years. In 1966 they wore cloth masks over their faces (which I like actually it adds to the body horror).

The Daleks are unchangeable though. If they tried changing the Daleks in any significant way it would make national news. I can just imagine the outcry from the national newspapers. "Write to the Prime Minister! Stop this travesty!" But seriously I do think the design is perfect. IMO it can't bettered and if they had tried ... ohhhh, I'd have been miffed. I honestly don't think they'd be as popular if you altered that design. They wouldn't be Daleks any more.

"Cheesiness" was always a huge integral part of the Dr Who phenomenon--Trek isn't without its reconstituted props either--waiting to see what part of the set's gonna jiggle this week, or looking for the gap in the monster costume.

But the suspension of disbelief is where sci fi fans soar above the average TV viewer. They tell a story; we hop on board.

I sorta feel sorry for the CGI generation; they're gonna miss out on what it means to be an active and imaginative viewer of sci fi.

And Daleks frickin' RULE.

Yes! But have you ever noticed that robots say the same thing when they kill?
Dalek: Exterminate!
Cyberman: Delete!
Unknown Robot: You are the weakest link. Goodbye.

Trek has it's cheesy aliens yes but let's not pretend it is as cheesy as Doctor Who, it's not and if it were I would never have have gotten into Trek.

That cheesy sci-fi is what turns most people away from sci-fi. Trek (TNG onward) is certainly less cheesy than Doctor Who.

I do like Doctor Who but the cheesy aliens are NOT why I like Doctor Who, the cheesy aliens ARE the weakest link in that show. Ya know, this idea that if the Daleks look were to change it would no longer be the Daleks is kinda silly considering that the same could have been/probably was said about Klingons and their new look in TNG.

I want a bumper sticker that says: "my other vehicle is a TARDIS" or "My TARDIS is in the shop"

The Daleks wouldn't even accept change when what's his nuts became a humanoid Dalek hybrid. They have however made some mods over the years with the Supreme Dalek and the creation of the heavy weapon Dalek.

There was also conceptualized long ago a crystal or transparent Dalek and I even think it came to fruition in Revelation of the Daleks. It's been so long and watching Colin Baker eps are mostly painful. Too bad he got crap episodes and a fruity clown suit. :bugout: :whatthe: :O  :p

I've always wanted to see a female regeneration but I don't think they'll ever do it. They turned Starbuck into a woman in BSG at it didn't bother me at all. I think it would be awesome if DW did it, even if it was only for one season. And if the fans turn rabid, she can die and go back to male for his thirteenth and final (?) regeneration.

I like Star Trek but I like Doctor Who better, is anyone else here a fan?

I'm a fan of the new stuff, but like Trek better.

In recent years I've become a bigger fan of Who than ST sad to say. I love the fact that it doesn't take itself too seriously and it has more heart (the new series that is, haven't seen too much of classic the classic shows). Kinda reminds me of TOS in some ways.

Check out this Dead Ringers spoof. Gets me every time.

I am very much looking forward to the new series next month. I liked Tennant but glad he's gone was getting a bit slow.

I agree, he was starting to really annoy me, if Agyeman had stayed on I'm not sure I would have watched the 4th season. Do you know when the new series is starting again?
