I don't see the two interpretations as mutually exclusive. It's like Sisko tells Jake in "The Hands of the Prophets" and also Kira tells Sisko in "Destiny". Even if the Prophets are aliens, they do have powers beyond our comprehension and there's no Earthly reason why they shouldn't be thought of as Prophets.

Ditto.

I third that notion.

I doubt they are more powerful or even close to equal in power to the Q.

It's difficult to compare them to the Q because I get the impression that the Prophets are a lot more reclusive and less inclined to "interfere" ~ by that I do not mean unwilling, just not as obstinately intrusive as Q. While Q flaunts his power on several occasions, the Prophets tend to keep to themselves, use their powers a lot more reluctantly, and have to be quite assiduously persuaded.

The ability to be an 'outside observer' on linear time itself seems to me in any case to be a very significant one to have, as the Prophets do. Not to mention being able to create a wormhole in space-time. For the Pah-Wraiths to have had free reign could have been disastrous, not on the order of, say, a Q or number of Q who in some imagined circumstance gone off the rails and been able to wreak havok as they saw fit-not that the Q Council or whatver authority may exist in the Continuum would not have reigned them in forthwith. I'm no DS9 expert, but, the PW were evil, and, who's to say that they'd have been satisfied with playing God with the Bajorans, their 'children'?...Would Dukat have wanted to stop, with all the power the PW instilled in him or in posession so to speak permitted, at the doorstep of Bajor?Nope, that's pretty obvious, though, shrug, I suppose the PW were like the Prophets very focused in their interests.

Even if i though they were wormhole aliens, I'd call them prophets. Calling them worm hole aliens can get you blown up if youre not careful

Am I wrong, or in the first DS9 episode the wormhole aliens didn't not even know who the corporeal beings were. Sisko had to explain everything to them. How could they have been Bajor's gods? I think the writer's back tracked a bit later to indicate the Prophets really cared for Bajor.

The prophets dont have liner time so after they met sisko thats when they could have sent out the orbs 10000 years in the past
