Ideally, it should have done that from that start, but all shows need time to find their ground.

Agree. You could argue that every spin off Star Trek series had their best year in season 4 or 5. We got a glass half full.

We lost Enterprise right when it was getting great. Then, TATV sealed its fate. *sigh* I could really go for a RW trilogy. They could do so much with it. So, would it be possible to run the Abrams movies and make prime universe movies at the same time?

ENT's 4th season showed what a prequel should be. It connected the dots in unexpected and surprising ways.

Yes! Because I had my doubts about what some fans wanted from ENT--that it would plod along with ONLY prequel matter and have no nice surprises, and even the characters themselves would be lost in the shadows of four series' worth of Starfleet crew.

I think B/B were aware of this, too, and went out of their way to try to offer paths different than what was expected--as lostshaker pointed out, trying only to fulfill fan expectations would be setting themselves up for certain failure.

But they were a little too earnest about providing the new paths for a little too long. Trekbuff's right; fans grew impatient. More balance (between the expected prequel storylines and the new) was needed from the outset.

ENT's 4th season showed what a prequel should be.

The thing is, as far as I understand, ENT was never promised to be a "prequel to TOS" as to a point that it "should have been closely and minutely connected with TOS's characters and events" -- but unfortunately the latter was the exact idea some ST fans seem to have had about it. Hence their "betrayed expectations."

When fans were expected to be broad-minded, many of those showed the opposite. And, actually, that started much earlier than ENT, back in the 1980s and then it negatively progressed through the 1990s (the infamous "franchise fatigue" diagnosis).

B&B tried to develop ST, give it more modern artistic space wings, so to say. But they overestimated their target audience, which was their most pitiful miscalculation. Yet, that absolutely doesn't mean the artistic quality of their product was worsening - it was the other way around. Sadly, it wasn't what was wanted... Therefore, the shallow yet praised reboot in 2009.

And?

TW, if there was an ad for a series saying "100 years before Christopher Columbus set his foot on the land of America, another Spaniard dreamt of discovering new lands...", you would seriously expected it to be closely linked to the history of Columbus's life and to Isabella I of Castile as well? And you would not think of any other variation possible?

CHUCK likes Tron. Good enough for me... :p

I've been meaning to get around to watching TRON, because of Chuck. And I just finished the movie. All I can say is WOW!!!! Just... WOW!!!! Frakken awesome, brilliant. That's the perfect movie for Chuck's dad. The writers of Chuck have proved their brilliance once again.

Man--lostshaker's expression is generally precise and rarely hypberbolic, therefore: I've gotta get my hands on this film... :D

The 20th anniversary edition dvd is really worth owning. The film is great, as are the special features.

ordered it. :)

anyhow, I was thinking, you can't really judge Season 4 by ordinary Season standards. the show was cancelled; of course Coto had to cram all the best stuff in while he could. given the choice between that and a more balanced Trek season, I'm pretty happy with the route he took.

I always liked season 4. It has some of my favorite episodes in it. Those mini-arcs always seemed to attract me more than singular episodes.

Whatever the reason season 4 was the way it was, I really liked it (except for you know what episode).

Season 4 is the best season of ENT, at least for me it was. Especially the Aguments/Arik Soong arc and the Mirror episodes of course. ;)
