I actually play STO, his argument, at least as far as early release was accurate, there wasn't alot of content He should have however read the Developers Forums, STO has undergone many changes, and yet even more is being applied. PvE missions for Klingons, Diplomatic Core for Feds, and thats not to mention all of the content they have planned beyond.

His loss, fortunately there are those of us that have stuck with STO and as a Lifetime subscriber to it I will continue to watch as it evolves. Hope to see some of you there, if you want to chat in game sometime feel free to look up @Nemesis_Wolfheart in game.

Keep on Trekkin'

I'll admit, the first few months of the game were not very good. However, this game is changing rather quickly and I would recommend you all to give it a try.

The problem was that Atari gave Cryptic a 2 year window to create the game whereas most MMOs are in development for something like 3-5 years. The result was a half-finished game.

The game is much better now. The current Developer team is constantly giving us new content. There is even a weekly episode (mission) that becomes available every Saturday morning at 11AM pacific time. The Foundry is a new system they will be implementing shortly where users can create their own missions from an extensive library of assets.

One of the best parts is the community. They're not inmature like they are in most MMOs and for the most part they are quite cooperative and helpful.

If you want to give it a try, I'll give you a buddy key.

Agreed. It keeps getting better and more complex. The graphics still need work, though.

Specifics, Jayden. Other than ST09, what have they done? I see little change and, in fact, more creative controls for prime universe. STO needs to do better staying current with books but it's the type of game needed to invigorate young fans. God knows, trek doesn't do as good as wars in marketing and dishing out content.

Lucasfilm/Lucarsart does a great job of getting people hooked at a young age. It's about physical conflict where as Star Trek is occasionally about physical conflict. Think back to when you were a kid playing Cowboys vs Indians (or whichever generation you grew up in). How often did the cowboys and the Indians settle their differences diplomatically?

While the story is what makes Star Trek deep, without the combat this game becomes a choose your own adventure book which won't attract many subscribers. Not enough subscribers means a canceled game. I would much rather do more combat than would be necessary than not play at all.
As far as CBS's ideas, they simply had make the franchise evolve with the changing times. During TOS, the social climate in the US was far different from what it was during TNG and today. If it does not evolve, it becomes Lost in Space (figuratively and literally) where Matt LeBlanc plays Captain Kirk.

If it us to be primarily combat, the combat needs to become more complex and involve skill. The game's combat is simplistic and repetitive. If not for good story, the combat would have bored me a long time ago. Unfortunately, I don't see the repetitiveness of fighting being fixed.

While I agree (to a degree) that STO's combat is simplistic and repetitive, it is more complex that the majority of MMOs.
I have only played a dozen or so MMOs so I am far from an expert. On top of that, I do not bother to break out the calculator to ensure that I am getting the absolute most DPS possible. I play to have fun so if someone has empirical evidence that proves me wrong, please do not think I am a liar. These have been my experiences:

SWG:
Get to proper range for your weapon, spam attack, pick up loot.

EVE:
Get to proper range for your weapon, spam attack, pick up loot.

WOW:
Run up to target, stand still, spam attack, pick up loot.

LOTRO:
Run up to target, stand still, spam attack, pick up loot.

In STO you need to think about positioning. On the ground you need to worry about receiving and giving flanking damage. In space you need to focus on the different sides of your shield and the shield of your target. Positioning alone adds far more depth and complexity than any other MMO I've played.

So once again, I wish the combat was so complex that it would take me 15 minutes to disable an adversary. I would get a real sense of accomplishment from that but the fact is, it's a game. If we require that all players have to be smart enough to outsmart their opponent in combat, our subscriber base would be so small it would make this forum look like a Las Vegas casino. That would end the game.
I'd rather play a game that I like 75% of than imagine a game that I like 100%.

Well, been with STO since headstart/Beta testing and I have to say the game has really grown since it's birth. The new ships, new missions and new deplomacy aspects are really adding some much needed meat on these bare bones.

But some of the main problems with the game is the fact, almost everybody who has been playing for a while are all Rear Admirials or higher!  I don't recall ANY Trek show showing featering all Admirals in command of ships!  The coveted rank of Captain quickly comes and goes until to you get to RA. I real disapointment for many. All the cool ships available to buy on the C-Store are all for the RA's. Captains get NOTHING! Yes it is true, you are the Captain at any rank, but the actual rank of Captain is really over shadowed by RA's. A real shame there. You still have to preform simple scan missions (something that is clearly below the likes of a RA, yet you are doing it).  That and the fact you have no true First Officer to order to do those mundane missions. Other problems like the fact you have to choose a career path (Science, Engineering, or Tactical) and pursue that type of ship! (instead of ships being classified as a Light Cruiser or Heavy Cruiser or Destroyer, etc).

All in all, the game is decent and is getting better. So give it a try.

I agree that captain comes and goes too quickly. I feel that rank should have held longer. The game is getting better but now that my main char is at his maximum rank, I don't have much incentive to use him so I created another one for the new content. Of course, I've never been an MMO player before and only play this one cause it's trek. I also have not played the borg queen level cause I don't belong to a fleet, I don't belong to a fleet or play in a group cause I only like playing with people I know and I only have 1 friend left in the game.
