Why do people like Data so much?

There is one thing that has always troubled me about Data.  Now don't get me wrong he was one of the most unique of all Star Trek characters, and his name is often mentioned in Robot and Android exhibits around the country.  But what I don't understand is this:

Why is it that if people don't like him it is considered an abomination?  Remember way back when when Dr. Pulaski called him Data (like cat), fans hated her character so much that she was taken off the show, inspite of her being a much better actress than McFadden.  I have even seen people call others trolls for not liking Data.  What gives?  Explain.

I've never heard anything that indicates Polaski was removed from the show due in any part to the way her character treated Data.

And I doubt that really had anything to do with her removal.

I would think that Patrick Stewards continued attempts to bring back McFaddan was why Polaski was written off.

Data's struggle to be more human reminds us of our humanity and the pursuit to be a better person. Simple as that.

As for people lashing out at others for not liking him, well, that's just hardcore fans being fanatically hardcore. It's like telling a fan of TOS that Kirk is a wimp.  :O

Ok gotcha, I don't think I would call Kirk a wimp...it would be like calling Clint Eastwood gay.

I was under the impression it was because thousands of upset fans wrote to Paramount. I never knew Stewart had anything to do with it.

I never heard of any upset fans writing Paramount over the Polaski character.

And I dont think TNG had that great of an audience at the time. After all it was only TNG's 2nd season.

But Stewart did have a role in the return of McFadden.....she even said as much.

But I cant tell you how much of a role he had.

I run across fans who dislike Data very rarely.  He was the Spock of TNG: the unemotional, logical character who reflected humanity far better than the flesh-and-blood characters.

It happens quite a bit on "Star Trek", starting with Spock then Data, then Odo and the Holographic Doctor.

Data is adorable!!! His innocence contributes to his character that no other Star Trek character has before. Lore was also an android and everyone loved him to. Lore was more of the bad boy Data and people thought that it was funny to see Data acting like that (but it wasn't Data). As it have been said very few people dislike Data. I am one of the people who LOVE him. he would be the perfect best friend. Even when he had emotions. His quest to be more human also (as had been said before) contributes to the quest for us to better ourselves every day. He helped us realize that we are all one species, all one people, and all one big family. Plus Brent Spiner did a fantastic job of portraying this character which just adds to the fandom of Data. So thanks to all those Data fans and to Brent for loving this most awesome android Star Trek character. ¿

Trek was never meant to be a collection of mindless episodes about meeting aliens and engaging in space combat. In each series there was an underlying theme centered around non-human characters... TOS and TNG beat the heck out of the "what is it to be human" theme. So I guess, to ignore Data, is to ignore the main message of the show.

It is interesting that an android crops up only so far in the future and that there are so many people still biased against them... You have to appreciate the parallel between TOS and TNG here... Just like in TOS, an emotionless outsider proves to be the most human of all and selflessly saves the Enterprise...

Having said that, I dislike Lore. I have to. It makes no difference that he looks like Data. He represents an AI experiment gone bad... -- a robot that engenders fear and distrust.

I like him because he is a combination of amazing, good, safe, and naive. I would not like someone comdeming someone for not liking him though.

I like him because of the things he says. How he interprets things. The episode "Data's Day" when he gives Miles the "good news" is hilarious! As well as when he tries to have a lover's quarrel in "In Theory" because he thinks that's what should be done. Makes me think sometimes how silly we humans are. :rookie:

Data's funny, fills the traditional "Spock" role of an outsider commenting on the "human condition", and gives us more of an insight into ourselves. He is a unique character, and one that I want to pluck out of the TV and put on a shelf.

Actually, I don't really like Data. I find him a bit cliched and annoying. Sure, he's not nearly as inconsequential as Dr. Crusher or Wesley, or even Geordi for that matter...but I certainly don't find him to be a striking character.

Usually, I find the "Data-centric" episodes to be the second-most annoying, right after the kid-centric episodes.

I AM KEE-ROCK!!
