Stellar Cartography.

I never understood the need for an entire room for stellar cartography.

In TOS and its corresponding films, galaxy maps would simply appear on the main viewscreen.

Hard to believe that 80 years later, Starfleet would find it more efficient to create a whole room (and a large one at that) for these very same galaxy maps.

It's for the research, the bridge screens seem to be general or all access if you will, but not every single thing you need(like there being an engineering on the bridge).

Every department would have there own lab(if you will), aeroponics bay, biology lab, geological lab, etc...

Wouldn't mapping new star systems (or changes in existing systems) fall under the job of Starfleet Navigator? And isn't the navigator's place on the bridge?

Again, it seems like a simple viewscreen or small holo-display at a bridge station could serve the same function.
