I think giving Data a cat was clever.

It really was clever. It gave Brent and the writers many chances to play around with making Data more human. An making him more funny.

i dont know...when i watch the shows where the cat is a different sex, it seems really obvious like its just an error.  but i would totally live with your explanation...

The irony about the Spot issues is that what other TV show series would spark conversation about a characters pets gender? Some may call us nerds, but I am proud that we notice such things.

Do you folks remember the episode where Data was linked to the main computer and the play that Dr. Crusher was trying to direct had all the dialogue on her PADDS changed into "Ode To Spot"?

My cousin has a cat named Butter, but he looks EXACTLY like Spot! I keep telling her that she should change his name to that (jokingly of course, especially since she is in no way a Star Trek fan), but she just rolls her eyes. The name Butter fits him a lot better anyway, though.

If we could make the most "logical" explanation for the randomization of Data's cat "Spot" on TNG it would be that Data actually had three cats in total during his time on the Enterprise. All three cats Data named "Spot" (in memory/honor of his first cat). A male Somali cat, a male orange tabby and the last cat was also an orange tabby but female.

Implying if we were to look at this realistically- it would mean that Data's first two cats died (old age or an accident on the Enterprise during a dangerous mission ect.)

To make a possible tie-in with the "Generations" movie, Data started crying "tears of joy" when he found "Spot" (his third cat which is the female orange tabby) not just because he was glad to see her but because he was afraid he had lost another cat so he was relieved to find out that this "Spot" found a safe place to be and didn't die.

To me this makes the most sense- so that's my explanation.

I really like that explanation. It makes a lot of sense... although it bothers me to think that so many kitties could die in Data's care.

Another thing: why on earth would Data name a completely spotless cat "Spot"? Considering what a logical creature Data is, I could never understand how he could give such a nonsensical name to his pet! I have considered the thought that perhaps the name was due to the verb "to spot", rather than the adjective. Still seems strange, though...
